SAMR CARD PD SUGGESTIONS
- Print out all of the SAMR cards that are appropriate for your grade.
- Divide teachers into small groups (3-4 teachers in each group).
- Have each group read one SAMR card scenario and discuss where it belongs (substitution, augmentation, modification or redefinition?)
- Collaborate and discuss reasoning.
- Each group will share with the entire group the level and their reasoning. Keep discussion focused on SAMR.
PLEASE NOTE: There is not always one right answer. It is the discussion and reasoning that is the crux of the activity.
TOBY'S TECH TIP: Software Updates
IOS 10 was released last September and many other updates come along when you least expect. Therefore, you can be proactive and get your iPad ready for updating.
- Make some room: If you are like me, then you've been meaning to go through your iPad and delete apps you no longer use. Use the launch of iOS 10 as the impetus to finally perform a bit of maintenance on your device. This exercise will not only free up some storage space but also remove many app icons to make navigating your device easier. The biggest occupier of your iPad's storage is almost certainly your large (and ever-growing) photo and video library. After deleting unwanted apps, it's time to scroll through the Photos app and delete the photos and videos you no longer want. And for the photos and videos you want to keep, you can move them to the cloud or a computer so that they're safely stored without taking up space on your iPhone.
- Update your apps: To lessen the chance of some of your apps running into problems with iOS 10, you should update them. Open the App Store app, click the Updates button in the lower-right corner and then tap the Update All button in the upper-right corner.
- Back up your iPad
- Step 1: Make sure your iPad is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
- Step 2: Tap the Settings icon, and then tap iCloud.
- Step 3: Tap Backup, then toggle iCloud Backup on (if it isn't already). Finally, tap Back Up Now. Depending on how much time has passed since your last backup, this may happen quickly, or it may take hours. Plan ahead.
- Step 4: Verify that the backup finished successfully by tapping Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, then selecting your iPad. You should see details of the backup, including time and size.

QUIZLET LIVE https://quizlet.com/help/2444125/how-to-use-quizlet-live
All teachers on Quizlet can create Live games with their students for FREE.
What you need to create a game:
- A Quizlet study set (with at least 12 unique terms)
- At least six students
- A computer, tablet, or phone for each student
- 10-20 minutes of class time
How does it work?
- Students work together in randomized teams of 3 or 4
- Teams race to match all the terms and definitions
- Incorrect answers reset the team's progress to zero
- The first team to match all 12 terms correctly in a row wins.
- At the end of a game, teams see what what they matched correctly and incorrectly
How to set up a game in your class:
- Set up your computer to project your screen to the class
- Give each student a computer or tablet
- On your computer, go to the set you’d like your students to study
- Select the purple "Live" button in the study mode section. If you don't see the button, you may need to update your account settings so we know you're a teacher.
- On the next screen, select "Create game

One Best Thing Reflections
Thank you Vanguard Gayle for sharing ONE BEST THING iBooks with your teachers and getting their feedback!
From: Stacy Perry, First Grade Teacher
I chose One Best Thing: Creativity Through Making. I chose it because creating a Makerspace in my classroom is something I have been doing my own research about for quite some time. I found the book to be an useful introduction of how to execute a Makerspace project. Since I have been doing my own research, I know that there is much more that needs to be covered before jumping into a Makerspace project, but I found the book to be a good first step. I especially appreciated the corresponding links (makerspace.com is especially useful) to help teachers get started.
NEXT STEPS FOR VANGUARDS: WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
- Create and share with Toby your next PD plan.
- Use, share and send evidence from the list of core formative assessment apps.
- Continue to send Toby evidence of student work. This can be a video, photo(s) and or explanation from a teacher outlining their work.
- Meet with your instructional team at least once a month at a designated time and place to summarize and share this SMORE and professional development and how you differentiate this information to your teachers. The instructional team consists of you, your Principal, Lead Literacy Teacher, Lead Tech Teacher and Assistant Principal.
- Use Toby as your "go to" Education Manager for Technology. If I don't know the answer, I will direct you appropriately. Use FaceTime as much as you can. My cell is 215-680-0123. I am also here to coach you and help you plan your professional development sessions.
OUR NEXT SESSION WILL RESUME ON 3/2/17
