Due to the book fair this week, the Rising Star Library will be closed from Tuesday, November 13 – Friday, November 16. The Rising Star Library will only accept overdue books at this time, and all previous materials that were due that week will be renewed through Thanksgiving break! Thank you so much for your cooperation!
FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………
Did you know all students will receive a full breakfast and a full lunch regardless of the money they have in their account effective November 1, 2018?
- School Café is the parent portal for Shawnee Mission School District food service. The link to instructions for using School Café https://www.smsd.org/about/departments/food-service. Parents can:
View their children’s account balance and purchases
Set restrictions for ala carte purchases
Submit free and reduced meal applications
Set reminders for low account balances
- If a parent does not want their child to purchase anything from food service, they need to contact the food services office.
- Students will not be permitted to purchase ala carte items if their account is negative.
- Parents or guardians of all students will receive low account notifications via email or phone call if their students account is at $8.00 or less for full price and $2.00 or less for reduced price.
- Negative account notifications will be made to all students via parents or guardians email or phone call.
- All negative account balances will follow the student throughout the year.
- If the debt is not repaid, all negative account balances will be sent to the collection agency at the end of the school year.
Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at http://foodservices.smsd.org
Scholastic Book Fair!
STUDENTS! PARENTS! GRANDPARENTS! STAFF!
COME, prepare to wander into an Enchanted Forest Book Fair.
It’s a whimsical place...
full of irresistible books...
kids can’t wait to read...
so their imaginations can grow!
November 14 - 16th
In order for the Fair to run without a hitch and get children reading we need your help! We will be collecting used books to use in conjunction with the "All for Books" drive. This helps get books in the hands of all students. Donate any gently used books you have to the designated boxes outside the office doors.
You can also volunteer to help during the fair. No experience is necessary and if you volunteer more than 2 hours you can get $5 off your book order! Watch for a sign up genius link.
The theme for the fair is "Enchanted Forest". We are wanting to transform the library and have fun with this theme. If you have any decorations or craftiness that you could donate please contact Leah Mothersill (leah.mothersill6@gmail.com) or Liz Higgins ( lizerena49@gmail.com).
Thanks!
Mr. Wilson & the Book Fair
Mr. Wilson will be training 3rd-6th grade students on using the Scholastic Book Fair app this week through library as well. This is another way that students can create digital wish lists through the app as an alternative to the paper copy. The advantage to the app is that it allows students to preview the book and watch trailers that they can access at home when they are away from the book fair. Students will want to bring their iPads during their Book Fair Preview time, unless you choose to do paper copies!
K-2nd grade students and students who do not bring home their iPads will want to make a paper copy of the wish list instead of using the app!
PTA Citizenship Program
The PTA is proud to sponsor, support and encourage Rising Star 5th and 6th graders to write a poem or essay on the theme, “My Motivation.” Only new and original works inspired by the theme, “My Motivation” will be accepted.
· Poetry entries must be between 50-500 words.
· Essay entries must be between 200-1000 words.
Please visit the PTA Citizenship Website for official rules and student entry forms. Entry forms can also be picked up at the Rising Star front office.
Submit your Citizenship entry to the Rising Star front office by November 30!

Chat & Chew Books & Dates
Books can be found in our Rising Star Library, in most teacher’s classrooms, at the Johnson County Library & of course on Amazon or in brick & mortar stores. If you choose to purchase the books for your student, please consider donating them at the end of the year so that we can have more copies available to lend out each year. Donated books can be given to Mr. Wilson in the library. Thank you!
*Chat & Chew Party: Those students who have read & attended at least 3 Chat & Chew book sessions are invited to bring their lunch & their favorite book to share with their peers.
