May 16-22, 2021

Greetings,

Thank you for all of your support and patience during testing last week. This week we will welcome students on campus to take their make-up assessments.

Dallas ISD is ready to return face to face next year in a safe environment that adheres to the updated safety guidelines. The research is clear that most students perform better when they’re face to face in classrooms with their teachers and other classmates. They have missed some important moments by not being in the classroom.

You should have received a survey via Remind on Friday, May 14, 2021. Dallas ISD requests that parent(s)/guardian(s) of virtual students complete and submit the survey so plans can be developed for the 2021-22 school year. The survey can also be found here in English and Spanish.

Last week, one of our grandparents, Dr. Mokuria, donated sweet treats for our teachers and staff. This week, our teachers and staff will continue to be showered with love and appreciated by our supportive PTA under the leadership of the president, Mrs. T. Blackburn. Thank you to our HSMA communities and families for your unwavering support.

Speaking of the HSMA PTA, if you missed the PTA General meeting held on May 11th, please review the Principal's Report for updated information about upcoming events.

Mrs. O'Dell, thank you for hosting our family storybook night. Your commitment to supporting reading at HSMA by modeling read-alouds demonstrates your diligence and devotion to our community of readers.

Our HSMA Cheerleader tryouts have begun. Please contact our sponsors, Mrs. Y. Fuller and Mrs. J. Washington, at ygreen-fuller@dallasisd.org or jawashington@dallasisd.org for more information.

Thank you for your partnership.

Honored to serve,

Niki Jones

Parent's Guide to the ARD Process and the Notice of Procedural Safeguards

In October of 2020, the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) required the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to make several edits to the Parent's Guide to the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Process and the Notice of Procedural Safeguards documents. A summary of changes for each of these two documents can be found below this notification.

Effective immediately, OSEP requested that all Local Education Agencies (LEAs) in Texas distribute the updated versions of these documents to all families who received the previous versions during the 2020-2021 academic year. This includes families of students who were evaluated and determined to not qualify for special education services, wherever applicable.

Mrs. Green, our Special Education instructor will contact all families affected by the updates, per TEA directive.

Following Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order lifting the mandatory mask-wearing requirement,

Texas Education Agency released guidance for schools to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Schools must continue to require students and staff to wear masks. Based on these guidelines and our commitment to student and staff safety, Dallas ISD will continue following our current health and safety protocols. We will require that students and staff wear masks over their nose and mouth and adhere to hand-washing and social distancing practices when on district property. We appreciate everyone's understanding and cooperation. We will bring updates as they are provided.
