Celebrate Gratitude!

National Gratitude Month in November is a time to celebrate and give thanks! Celebrating the month can be done in several ways:

  1. Start a gratitude journal. Write about someone or something you’re thankful for every day.
  2. Share your gratitude with others. Letting someone know you’re grateful for their care, service, or friendship often lifts their spirits or lifts a burden.
  3. Show your appreciation by giving back to your community, neighborhood, or favorite organization.
  4. Write letters of thanks. Handwritten letters and notes are simple and meaningful ways to give thanks to the people in your life.

Please share with us how your family is practicing gratitude. Use #CPAGivesThanks to show everyone how grateful you are!

Student Support/Interventions

Many students and teachers welcome the holiday season and the break it brings from instruction, testing, and homework after a busy fall. But the holidays can also bring anxiety and stress. Students feel the pressure just as much as adults, and some do not feel comfort and joy during the holidays.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) can support students and teachers alike through the holidays and the long winter break.

Please remember that the following website can be shared with all South Schools Teachers, Staff, Students, and Families.

Universal Tools and Designated supports spotlight: Tools that are available to help your child on the upcoming CAASPP test. CAASPP testing is the statewide assessment given to all public school students. Subjects assessed are Math and ELA to students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 and Science in grades 5, 8 and once in high school.

Test taking tip from:

Use the process of elimination.

Using the process of elimination, cross out all the answers you know are incorrect, then focus on the remaining answers. Not only does this strategy save time, it greatly increases your likelihood of selecting the correct answer.

The CAASPP offers the Strikethrough tool to all students, they can use it to eliminate the answers they know are incorrect. Here is a video showing the strikethrough tool in action.

Strikethrough Video

Can be used in multiple-choice questions to cross out answer options you know for sure are not correct.

National History Day

We are excited to gather your feedback and interest level for participating in the National History Day (NHD). Each year NHD frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for its broad application to world, national or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. The 2021-2022 theme is Debate& Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences. The theme provides a focused way to increase students’ historical understanding and an opportunity to develop perspective and understanding rather than merely being able to cite facts and figures. Through participation in this program, students in grades 4-12 become amateur historians on their journey to discover the significance of their chosen historical topic. Homeschooling Advice

What to Do when your Child Hates Writing

Does your kid hate to write?

After all, some kids love to write. Some kids hate to write. And then there are those kids who loathe writing with a passion. You bribe, threaten, and beg. Nothing works.

So What Do You Do When Your Child Hates Writing?

The first thing not to do is give up in despair! Instead, start breaking down assignments into smaller parts. And use these 5 tips to help your child develop the skill of writing.

Separate Writing From Your Content Subjects

It’s tempting to require writing from your kid in all areas. A paragraph about history. A paragraph on science. And that’s in addition to your language arts lessons!

When your child hates writing, it’s too much. They’re going to fight you every step of the way and hate homeschooling.

So back off. Leave the formal writing practice to your writing lessons when your child hates writing.

I have been a homeschooling mom for seventeen years. I have three children ranging in age from 17 to 22. I homeschooled my two oldest from Kindergarten through 12th grade. My youngest is currently a senior in high school at Cabrillo Point Academy and taking college courses concurrently. I am passionate about homeschooling and love that you can tailor your curriculum to your child’s learning style. I am excited to work with other homeschooling parents and look forward to meeting you at an event soon! Happy schooling!

Maria Ramirez - OC Special Programs Family Liaison

Hi, I am a Mother of 4 sons, and grandma of 3 little ones. I learned about homeschooling about 5 years ago and I loved the whole concept. I homeschooled my youngest son and he loved it! I wish I had known this way of teaching when my other sons were little. I love helping families to thrive, and be successful! I am here to help you in any way I can.
