HERSHEY NOTES
MAY 4, 2018
FROM THE DESK OF MRS. FIELDS
Lunch and Recess Time Change
Next year we are going to try having recess before lunch! According to the National Research Association:
“Schools that schedule recess before lunch report that students eat more
fruits and vegetables, drink more milk, waste less food, and are better behaved
on the playground, in the lunchroom, and in the classroom. Some schools also
note a decrease in visits to the school nurse and more instruction time as benefits
of the schedule switch.”
We are going to have a trial run next Wednesday through Friday. Hopefully, we will be able to work out some of the kinks prior to the start of school next year. Please call the school’s office if you are planning to eat lunch with your child on May 9-11 so that we can give you the correct lunch time!
Buddy Walk
Don’t forget about the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk scheduled for May 19 at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater. Registration begins at 9:00 and the walk begins at 10:00. Please consider supporting this wonderful cause. We hope to see you there!
Teacher Appreciation Day is May 8 and National School Nurse’s Day is May 9.
We are so fortunate to have an amazing cast of teachers and nurses! Please help me shower them with love on their special day. There is no need to purchase a gift. Handwritten notes or pictures are always precious treasures held dear!
MISS RIORDAN'S NOTES
This past week, Mr. Schnepp and I talked with grades 3-5 about internet safety, primarily focusing on social media accounts. Here are some of the takeaways from our discussions:
When you post something on social media, it is the same thing as announcing something in public.
Keep your profiles set to private! Only accept people and/or follow people you know.
Use a safe username that doesn’t give any hints of first or last names, region you live in, gender, or age.
Don’t exchange any personal information with anyone online (ie: phone number, address, pictures, passwords, etc.).
Be polite! Don’t say something online that you wouldn’t say to someone in real life. Online life is real life.
How it can be reinforced at home:
Ask your child about their social media accounts. What does he/she think keeping themselves safe online looks like?
We have a lot of aspiring “youtubers”. Open up a discussion with them about how to safely post a public video. For example, do not wear clothing that identifies where you live or reveals your local area (ie: youth team apparel).
Periodically check their accounts, activity, and messages.
Enhance privacy settings. Talk to him/her about only accepting follower requests from people they know.
Reassure your child they can come to you or any adult at school if an issue arises that makes him/her feel sad, scared or confused while using social media.
As an added safety measure, it is a good idea to check the user agreements and terms of use. Most social media services set a minimum age of around 13. It is always a good idea to check and make sure you are comfortable allowing your child to have an account after reviewing the terms.
