The Week at a Glance
Weekly Concept: Weather Alert!
Essential Question: How does weather affect us?
Due to the shortened week of Thanksgiving, we will not be introducing a new story, vocabulary words, or spelling words. During the week of November 26, our class will focus on weather and how it affects us. We will talk about the different kinds of weather and how we keep ourselves safe. We will be addressing the following Indiana Academic Science Standard:
- "Investigate the severe weather of the region and its impact on the community, looking at forecasting to prepare for, and respond to, severe weather."

Next Week's Share Topic
Nov. 19-Nov. 23 No sharing due to Thanksgiving break
Nov. 26-Nov. 30 Family Traditions: What is your favorite family tradition? The tradition might be focused on a holiday, but it doesn’t have to be. Is there something special that you do? Is there a special time that you do it? How does your family get ready for it? Maybe you would like to draw a picture to tell about your traditions. You could also make a book about it. As always, just make sure you have prepared. A 20-30 "talk" does not show that you have prepared to the level that we expect with these share topic assignments.
Science: Thanksgiving STEM Day
On Monday we will gather with all of the second graders for another Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Day. This time students will be designing and crafting the Mayflower Ship, a dinner table, and a turkey hideout. They will also be expounding upon their study of solids, liquids, and gases as they explore some popcorn chemistry.
Math: Rounding/Estimating Whole Numbers
In math we are continuing addition and subtraction with numbers up to 1,000. Despite the smorgasbord of strategies we have for this, it can be a very difficult concept for some students to grasp. You will notice that we will constantly be revisiting this for the duration of the school year.
Next, we will be exploring rounding as a way of simplifying numbers to make them easier to understand or work with. We are beginning to understand that rounding can be used when an exact number isn't needed, and an approximate answer will do.
Box Tops for Education
We received $731.90 for our fall Box Tops for Education submission!!!! Please continue to clip and save those box tops and ask your friends and family to do the same. This is a relatively easy way to raise much-needed funds for our school. We will be sending a new load in April.
Since I will not be sending out a newsletter next week I want to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! I know my blessings when I see and feel them, and just to work alongside amazing children and their families is a genuine blessing!
