Dear Taylor families,
It’s been a month since school started, and we hope your students are settled in and enjoying school. We want to thank you for attending Back to School Night, for your donations to PTA, and for your donations to MEF during Donation Days this past week. We truly want the best for our Taylor students, and what you’ve done so far is some of the best ways to ensure that happens.
We had a great turn-out of about 110 people at Family Taco Night and PTA Association Meeting on September 17. Thank you to the families who attended! It was great to meet and mingle with other Taylor families. At our first PTA meeting following dinner, we adopted our annual budget and our goals for this year.
Our fundraising goal for this school year is $65,000. We will continue contributing towards the funding of Homework Center, field trip bus expenses, staff appreciation events, teacher supplies and safety supplies. New this year, we are raising money to help replace some of the outdated projectors and old TVs in classrooms with new TVs that will last longer and facilitate teaching. We hope you will join us in supporting our teachers and help contribute to this effort!
To date, we have 106 PTA members and we have raised $18,000. We know the beginning of the school year gets busy, so if you haven’t had the chance yet, please go to our website now to join and to donate (www.tinyurl.com/TaylorMiddlePTA). We would love the participation of more Taylor families (we have about 850 students)! We appreciate all contributions, big and small, and what’s the most important is that you participate in any way you are able to.
Please save the date for our next PTA Association Meeting on Monday, November 5 at 7 pm - this meeting will be all about high school, what to expect, what to prepare. Guest speakers will include Mills High School Principal Duszynski and some staff members.
Also, don’t forget that voting on issues is reserved for PTA members only – please become members by October 5 if you would like to vote at our November 5 meeting. The topic for our next meeting will be announced once it’s finalized – we plan to have special speaker(s) come speak about issues you’re concerned about.
Lastly, just a reminder that there are many simple ways you can support our school (LAZY FUNDRAISING). Our latest fundraising effort is through Good Eggs. Please click on the links below to learn more:
- Good Eggs (Fresh grocery delivery service. 5% of every grocery order placed in October & November goes to Taylor Middle School! And if 20 new families sign up from our school, our school gets an additional $500 bonus. The first five get a bouquet of flowers, too!)
- BoxTops (Each BoxTop is worth 10 cents and adds up! Clip the BoxTops found in products such as Ziploc, Kleenex, Cheerios and Yoplait and submit them Mrs. Hurley or the front office by end of October for the next BoxTops submission!)
- eScrip (Designate Taylor Middle School as your school/nonprofit of choice (you can designate more than one, if you have students in more than one school) and register your credit/debit cards and loyalty cards. Every time you shop with those cards at participating stores, like Lunardi’s and Lucky Supermarkets, or dine out at participating restaurants, eScrip will donate money to our school! For Lucky, you will also need to enter your registered phone number when you pay.)
- Office Depot. When you check out, tell them to select Taylor Middle School (or enter 70010836 when you order online), and our school gets 5%!
- AmazonSmile. Designate Taylor Middle School or MEF as your charity of choice, and Amazon will donate 0.5% of your eligible Amazon purchases to Taylor or MEF! You must first select Taylor or MEF as your choice of charity. Then, every time you want to order from Amazon, make your purchases at https://smile.amazon.com/.
Thank you for your support, and see you at our next PTA Meeting on November 5!
Warmly,
Taylor PTA Board
Thanks to all of you, MEF's Annual Donation Days was a huge success! We truly are stronger together, and we are on our way toward meeting our annual goal -- which will enable an increased breadth and depth of programs for every Millbrae student. THANK YOU!
Donation Days 2018 total: $242,000
(That’s 37% of our 2018-19 annual goal!)
Also, have you heard about the MEF Gala?
It was a sold out event last year!! We had a lot of fun planning and attending this event.
We are looking for more parent volunteers and hope you will join us.
We meet once a month to update and discuss planning details. Meetings are not mandatory. We welcome parents that can offer remote help as well.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, October 23 at 7:15pm @ Fiddler’s Green located at 333 El Camino Real, Millbrae.
Ways to help:
- Join the sponsorship and donation committee. You can call, email or visit businesses to ask for much needed donations.
- Sign up to help prepare and share marketing materials (posters, lawn signs and emails)
- Offer up a skill or service you have access to (graphic design, data entry, decor, fundraising, etc)
Please join us in planning this event that raises funding for Millbrae education programs and boosts community moral!
If you need an accommodation to attend an event, please call the library at least 72 hours in advance of the event you want to attend: 650-697-7607
Project YES! is a group of 5th-9th graders that meets once a month over free pizza to talk about how to make the library space, programs, & materials the best they can be for young adults. Apply at tiny.cc/projectyes or pick up an application at the Service Desk.
CoderDojo (2nd & 4th Mondays from 4-6pm)
Youth in 5th-12th grade engage in self-directed projects that interest them. You decide what coding you want to work on including website design, app creation, language-based programming, and game building. We’ll provide a learning environment, and community support; bring your own device or use one of our computers.
Prior sign up at tiny.cc/coderdojo highly recommended to ensure your participation. Our next meeting is Monday, October 22nd from 4-6pm.
Collecting toys for Frankentoys Craft (Wednesday, October 24th from 3-4:30)
Bring your old dolls and toys from home or use our supplies to sew, glue, tape, staple, or otherwise create a ghoulish, freaky, or fun Frankenstein's Monster-like toy!
Community members: please donate your old dolls and stuffed animals prior to October 24th so our kids can have a great time!
Science Action Club Bird Scouts (Thursdays from 4-5pm)
Designed by the California Academy of Sciences, Science Action Club is a nationwide STEM program for middle school youth in out-of-school time. Through games, projects, and hands-on
activities, youth in SAC use citizen science to explore nature, connect with scientists, and design strategies to protect our planet.
We meet at Millbrae library every Thursday through 12/13 (excluding 11/22) for Bird Scouts and encourage youth to try their best to attend as many sessions as they can. In Bird
Scouts we will explore feathers, flight, and all the features that make birds unique.
The library is hosting two programs Saturday, October 27:
- 1:00 - 2:30 PM Superfest International Disability Festival: we are showing five really awesome films as part of this festival, which celebrates cutting-edge cinema portraying disability through a diverse, complex, unabashed and engaging lens. Superfest is one of the few festivals worldwide that is accessible to disabled filmgoers of all kinds. Check out the films we will show here: http://www.superfestfilm.com/millbrae.
3:00 - 4:30 PM Let's Talk Disabilities: Community conversation around access and inclusion for families with children with disabilities. We want to hear what children with disabilities and their families want from their community and how the library can improve services and support.
