Words To The Wise
Westowne Elementary School
A Message from Mr. Palmer
The second month of school has been busy! The Westowne staff would like to thank the parents and community members for their support with the implementation of all programs. We have had many parent volunteers in the building, as well as several parents willing to chaperone two fall fieldtrips. The Fall Fest was a success and the first annual Trunk-or-Treat went well even though the weather did not cooperate. Moreover, the Graphic Novels and Comics Reads Day was a success as many students brought in their favorite graphic novels and comics and we saw many interesting t-shirts! This year promises to be a successful school year as the WES staff is steadfast in our commitment to provide a rigorous, engaging, and challenging instructional program that ensures success for the academic achievement and social/emotional/behavioral growth of our students.
The next couple of weeks will be busy at Westowne. Students are excited to participate in our second annual WES Turkey Trot and Fall Celebration on November 9, 2018. This proved to be a fun and exciting event for all our students. Mr. Orsburn and Mr. Malecki have been working hard to prepare our third, fourth, and fifth grade students to qualify for the one-mile run.
Those intermediate students that can run the one-mile course in under 9 minutes, will participate in the Turkey Trot. The entire student body will be able to watch the race and cheer on our runners. It should be an exciting event. We are also hoping to get a local high school marching band to perform for all of our students. After the race, we will all take part in a craft that will benefit Catonsville Chamber of Commerce. We will end the half day of school with small Fall celebration parties in the classrooms. It should prove to be an enjoyable day! Please keep an eye out for the informational flyer and schedule of events.
We will also be celebrating American Education Week November 12, 2018 to November 16, 2018. We are excited to be able to welcome back grandparents as it will be a full five-day week! The American Education Week schedule can be viewed a bit further down the newsletter. If that is not enough, Maryland Green Author, Jennifer Keats-Curtis, will be in residence during this week. She did a great job last year as she worked with and shared how the writing process develops. Our students loved learning and working with Ms. Keats-Curtis and are looking forward to another great week!
I want to take this opportunity to thank our PTA for their ongoing support of our teachers and students. Please remember to sign up for the WES PTA. The $8 registration fee is minimal and the benefits to students are great!

Attention Parents of students in Grades 2-5!!
We are using Artsonia.com, an online gallery to publish and share artwork we’ve created beginning this year!
Artsonia allows your student to build an electronic portfolio of their own art.
If parent permission is given, the student’s art may be viewed by the parent and any out of town family who signs onto Artsonia.com and searches for the student in Westowne Elementary.
- Parents can control if comments made by the public will reach their student.
- If parent permission is given, students may use “Classroom Mode” to upload their own work. Parents may upload any work students do at home that you’d like to publish.
- Parents who give permission may also choose to have memorabilia made with their student’s artwork printed on it, such as t-shirts, mugs, keychains and plates.
This is a great chance to do some holiday shopping for grandparents! If you have not already granted permission, please log on to Artsonia.com and enter the code sent home with your student.
Contact me at aalbert@bcps.org if your code was misplaced, just give me your email address and I can start that for you. Thanks for supporting the Art program at Westowne!
Artfully yours,
Mrs. Albert
