Testing for NFL players is underway in preparation for the NFL Draft and the large financial investments teams will make in young athletes to hopefully build winning cultures and teams. Beyond the amazing physical metrics that athletes will post, teams are looking for players with an edge - the Champion's Mindset.
Dr. Jim Afremow has spent a lifetime studying and teaching. Afremow has written an incredible book on how we as athletes, leaders, teachers and parents can develop a "Champion's Mindset," emphasizing that before we can perform like a champion, we must remove self-doubt and think like one.
For Afremow being the best centers on your mindset before any work occurs. Preparing your mind to be the best starts with B.E.S.T.
B - Belief
When you believe you can become a champion, your training is champion-like. What Afremow suggests to the athletes he trains is to believe they finished second in the last event--fuel the belief with needing to raise your level ever so slightly.
E - Enjoyment
When Jesse Owens won four gold medals in Nazi Germany at the 1936 Olympics, he focused on the joy around him, not the hate. He said find the good, it's all around. We gain more enjoyment when we enjoy the process and look forward to working. Embrace the work. Love it, and with enjoyment comes progress.
ST - Self Talk
We hate having ants in our homes — and we should never have ants on our minds. ANTS (Automatic Negative Thoughts) create doubt, they create uncertainty and the quicker we remove them, the better we prepare.
For Afremow, being mentally tough is critical to having the mindset of a champion. And being mentally tough means moving on from a mistake while remaining positive and proactive.
Having great athletic talent is a wonderful skill, but without a champion's mindset, it can never reach its full potential.
A player with a fast forty is great.
A player with a champion's mindset is better.
I hope this was of benefit to you. Have a great weekend everyone!

HPS Staff Appreciation
We have AMAZING staff members at Hudsonville Public Schools. A group of parents is collecting stories of positive ways that HPS staff are impacting our students and the greater community. We will be sharing these with staff as a way to express our gratitude and encourage them in their good work. Please use the link here or QR code to share your story. Thank you!
Food Service
Food Service uses a system called Meal Magic that runs our lunch account system. Meal Magic has a one-stop website called Family Portal where parents can apply for Free/Reduced Meals, deposit funds into their students' meal accounts, monitor spending, and put any account restrictions in place. Now, all low-balance emails to parents will come from Family Portal.
Low-balance emails will be sent to parents that choose to receive the notifications. The opt-in procedure is very simple. Once logged into Family Portal, click the Notifications button, check the box to indicate that you want to receive low-balance reminders, and set a dollar amount indicating when to send notices. If a parent previously opted out of all email, they will need to uncheck that box to access the low-balance email settings. There are on-screen instructions to guide you.
When a student's balance is at or below the amount the parent selected, an email will be sent. Parents will only receive one request every three days for a given student. Low-balance email is handled per Family Portal account. If multiple people have access to a student, each person has its own control over how low-balances work for them.
