The Juliano Journal

Week of October 11-14

Dear Families,

Hopefully you all had a great week!

The students had such a great time at the APEX Fun Run yesterday. I loved watching them (and running with them) as they worked so hard to run those laps! A fun fact you can tell your child- if he/she finished all 36 laps, he/she ran/walked for 2.3 miles! Amazing! Thank you for helping your child make phone calls and emails to fund raise!

Parent- teacher conferences are being held next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. You should be receiving an email from Sign Up Genius next week to remind you of your time. Today your child came home with a Pre-Conference Parent Form. Please answer the questions and return to school by Tuesday. Your answers to the questions will help me prepare for our conference. Thank you!

Have a fabulous weekend, and GO CUBBIES! :)

Curriculum News

Language Arts

This week we read two fiction stories, Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen and City Green. Both of these stories involved people working together in their community to achieve a common goal. As we read these stories we defined the words setting, plot, and theme. After we read each book, we discussed the setting, plot, and theme of each, and noticed some similarities between the two books. Ask your child which book they liked the best!

Math

This week we began our study of Unit 2. Students learned the factors of 6 and 8, and practiced solving number stories involving these factors. We also reviewed how to find the area of rectangles and solved additional number stories involving area.

As you are aware, this unit I am just sending home the homework for the night instead of sending home the entire packet- it just makes it easier for the students and me, and hopefully you so you are sure what needs to be completed for the following day! Please continue to make sure your child is practicing multiplication facts each night.

Social Studies

This week we began Chapter 1 of our social studies program- Where in the World is our Community? In this chapter students will learn where Crystal Lake is in terms of hemisphere, continent, country, and state. This week we just focused on which hemisphere we live in, and students learned where the equator and prime meridian are.
