Zilker Library: October 2015

Happy Fall!

We've reached the 30th day of school and I am so thankful every day to be coming to Zilker when I get up in the morning! Thank you all for the warm welcome to Zilkerland! If I haven't met you yet, please feel free to come by the library before or after school and introduce yourself. I hope our October newsletter will show you what we've been up to in the library in the first month of school and what's on the horizon.

If you have some time to donate, I'd love your help in the library, too! Volunteers are needed on a daily basis. To sign up, visit the Volunteer Spot calendar HERE. And don't forget to follow us on Twitter (@ZilkerLibrary) and like us on Facebook!

Many thanks,

Mrs. Sharp

Friday, October 9th at 9 am

Zilker Library

The author of Neversink and The Vanishing Island, Barry Wolverton, will visit with 5th grade in the Zilker Library and share his process for writing his books. He will also read aloud from his two novels and answer questions. We are looking forward to hosting him!

Storybook Pumpkin Patch

The Zilker Library is having a fall celebration of pumpkins the last week in October! Students may decorate a pumpkin at home to look like their favorite book character and bring it in to display in the library. We're hoping the library will be filled with creative storybook pumpkins!

Pumpkins may not be carved or cut (they might get stinky!), please. Students may begin bringing their decorated pumpkins to the library on Monday, October 26th. They will be on display until Friday, October 30th, when all pumpkins need to be picked up. Any pumpkins left behind by 4 pm will be thrown away.

For more information, check the entry sheet your child received in the library or ask Mrs. Sharp about it!

Texas Book Festival

The Texas Book Festival is a fantastic annual event held at the Capitol building each October where many authors and illustrators share their stories, love of literature and talk about their writing. If you've never been, check out it this year! It's being held on Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, October 18th.

5th grade students from Zilker will be introducing the author Monica Brown in the Read Me a Story tent on Saturday morning at 10:00 am! Come cheer them on and hear Ms. Brown share her stories. Visit her website at: www.monicabrown.net

Zilker Family Checkout

Wondering if families can still check out books on a family account from the Zilker Library? The answer is...YES! Parents are welcome to come check out up to 10 books for their children before school from 7:30-7:45 am or after school from 2:45-3:15 pm (unless there is a meeting in the library or Mrs. Sharp is off campus). Books are due two weeks after they are checked out.
