March 2021 - Dallas ISD Substitute Employee Newsletter
****SUBSTITUTES, WE NEED YOUR HELP!****
2021 NEW YEAR, GOOD NEWS!
The Board of Trustees has approved a daily incentive for substitutes to address lower substitute fill rates that are a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The additional $20/full day daily incentive and $10/half day daily incentive is designed to increase fill rates and provide support to campuses during the spring semester.
This incentive will be paid on top of any other incentives for substitutes. Substitutes will continue to receive the additional incentive of $5 for working on Mondays and $10 for working on Fridays. Substitutes working a full day of service at an ACE campus will also continue to receive the ACE $10-per-day incentive.
**This incentive is only for substitutes working at a campus location.
Please remember substitutes must accept five assignments a month to remain active in the substitute pool.

The safety and well-being of all Dallas ISD employees is a top priority, which is why the district is working with Dallas County Health and Human Services, Parkland Hospital and other organizations in the community to secure vaccines for staff. Employees who are 65 years of age or older and those who have serious chronic conditions as outlined in the state’s 1B phase guidelines are eligible to receive the vaccine. Dallas County Health and Human Services is currently scheduling appointments for individuals who are 55 or older with certain underlying conditions to receive vaccines at the county’s vaccination clinics.
If you meet the Phase 1B conditions, please, complete and submit the form to let us know you are interested in receiving the vaccine from Dallas ISD, and you will be contacted as it becomes available.
If you have any questions, please contact us by sending an email to covid19@dallasisd.org.
WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
“My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness. Continue to allow humor to lighten the burden of your tender heart.” —Maya Angelou
“No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.” –Amelia Earhart
“Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” —Maya Angelou
“The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt with the heart.” — Helen Keller

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Substitute teachers serve an essential role in the education system, they often feel underappreciated and even ignored. Most assignments can leave substitute teachers without a lesson plan, while students can refuse to take the substitute seriously.
There are many different factors that can make the job of a substitute teacher difficult, but ultimately the position is a rewarding one. This month let’s explore tips for preparing to present the state standards while on a substitute assignment.
- Be aware of what grade and subject you are substitute teaching on your next assignment. Make sure that you know how to locate the standards and read them.
- When implementing standard based instruction one must always communicate the assignment, rules, and procedures.
- Make sure you have thought out all material needed to present or teach an assignment. Students must have the materials needed to complete the assignment as well.
- Make sure that you understand what is the goal of the standard that’s being taught. Teaching to standards ensures that the learning process is not disrupted during a teacher absence.
- Standards based instruction maintains the learning focus of assessments and student expectations for grade level learning.
Resources
If you are a substitute who has on boarded with us in the past two years you should be utilizing your resource materials. The STEDI Substitute Handbook and TEKS Learning Resource Guide.
- Also Our states very own website for locating TEKS Curriculum Standards https://tea.texas.gov/Academics/Curriculum/
- Lead4ward is an excellent free resource for Texas teachers as well as Texas Substitute teachers. www.lead4ward.com
- Dallas ISD campuses have instructional coaches, department heads, team leads, and the teachers next door to your assigned classroom for the day.
- Also, you can use any search engine for samples of TEKs standards and TEKS based lessons.
Do not take for granted that any student can miss a day of learning. It is important that every student is exposed to learning and maximizing all learning opportunities each and every day. Even when there is a substitute in the classroom.
TEACHER FEEDBACK REGARDING SUBSTITUTE PERFORMANCE
As a reminder, you will be evaluated on your performance by the teacher you are substituting for. We've provided the questions that the teachers will answer below, as a way to guide your efforts in their absence.
- Was all classroom work collected?
- Was the room left as neat and clean as it was found?
- Was classroom work explained satisfactorily?
- Did students report that they were treated fairly and consistently?
- Were any disciplinary issues reported?
