General News! Week of January 29th- February 2nd
Happy Monday !
A community that reads together succeeds together! With this in mind, SMMS is proud to announce the first-ever Bobcats One Read, an opportunity for all students, teachers, staff members, and interested families to read the same book – A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle – at the same time. Our goal is twofold: to foster a sense of community, and to support reading both inside and outside of school. We will kick off the project when we return from our Presidents’ Day break on Wednesday, February 21st.
For the One Read to be successful, each student will need a copy of the book. Several local businesses, community organizations, and generous individuals have made donations to offset the cost of books, but if you are able to purchase a copy for your child, it would be most appreciated. In addition, we ask those who can do so to donate an additional copy or copies of the book for those students who need one. Any edition of the book will work!
In addition to participating in classroom discussions, lunchtime activities, and optional contests related to the book, students and families may choose to cap off the One Read by attending an exclusive SMMS showing of the movie adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time at our local theater on Saturday, March 10th, at 9:00 a.m. for $8/ticket.
Thank you for making SMMS the vibrant community that it is. We hope you will join us in celebrating the power of storytelling by supporting the Bobcats One Read.
“Stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving.” Madeleine L’Engle
Thursday After School, will be held on Thursday, February 1st. Parents, each week your child is offered this opportunity. If you feel they should be attending, and are not, or do not come home with a slip, please drop one of us a quick note, and we will make sure they are invited. This is offered in all of our classes weekly, so students who need that little extra help and support, or just want to stay, should take advantage of this opportunity. Please remember your child must have a signed permission slip in order to stay, as well as an indication of how they will be getting home. Pick up is at 3:45. Thank you for being prompt!
Zero Period is a great way to start the day! If your child arrives in time to take advantage of this they are more then welcome to join us. We meet daily from 6:55- 7:25 am. Hope to see you there!

Language Arts-
This Week in Language Arts:
We did not get as far as we would have liked last week, so some of our activities will continue into this week... we will be identifying key details from our chapters and using them for our summarizing strategies. We will also use evidence from the text to develop key characters in the story. Later in the week we will identify symbols used throughout the story and explain why the author chose them as well as what they represent. Finally, we will analyze some of the more noteworthy quotes from the story and make connections to our own experiences.
Independent Choice Reading book #2 is due by Feb 5th.
This is week #4 for Tween Tribune. I am excited to see many more students getting going on this assignment. Their overall comprehension is improving, and I have seen some great written responses to the "Critical Thinking Question". These activities will definitely increase their ability to be successful on the EOG and in life! Please remember, the only way to increase Lexile levels and improve writing scores is through independent practice.
Thanks for your continued support from home!
Science- Mrs. Madera
Physical Science
This week we will continue focusing on the different types of waves. Students will be understanding the different parts of a wave, behaviors of waves and how it relates to light.
Students have been working on their Light Book in class. The books consists of notes, diagrams, and worksheet. We will be completing a rotational lab on Light, Color, Lenses, and Mirrors this week.
There will be a quiz on the Electromagnetic Spectrum, Light, Color, Lenses, and Mirrors content on Friday, February, 2nd. Students should be studying their notes and Light book each night.
We will then begin reviewing for the Waves Mastery Assessment. The Waves Mastery Assessment is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7th.
Please check google classroom for additional practice links and simulations. Review notes and vocabulary each night.

This project has three columns based on social, economic, and political changes that took place in Georgia during the New South Era. Students will choose one project from each column, and then complete the 10 point question at the bottom on the Leo Frank Case. All projects will be graded on a rubric.

This week, Team 8-2 Mathematics will begin working in Unit 5: Linear Functions. Thus far, the students have learned to identify functions represented by ordered pairs, value tables, graphs and mapping diagrams. Now, we will learn to identify linear functions and compare them to nonlinear functions. Our focus will be on linear functions, and students will recognize a linear function from its form y = mx + b. Students also need experiences with nonlinear functions, including functions given by graphs, tables, or verbal descriptions but for which there is no formula for the Rule.
Students will learn that proportional relationships are part of a broader group of linear functions, and they are able to identify whether a relationship is linear. Nonlinear functions are included for comparison. Later, in high school, students use function notation and are able to identify types of nonlinear functions.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS
MONDAY (29 JAN): Proportional Relationships
TUESDAY (30 JAN): Non-proportional Relationships
WEDNESDAY (31 JAN): Study
THURSDAY (1 FEB): Equations and Graphs
FRIDAY (2 FEB): None
QUIZ/TESTS
THURSDAY (1 FEB): Quiz – Proportional, Non-proportional and Slope
KEY VOCABULARY
Proportional Relationships: A relationship between two equal ratios.
Slope: a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line.
Intersecting Lines: Two lines that cross each other. Lines intersect at one point unless the lines fall directly on top of each other (in which case they represent the same line and are sometimes called coincidental).
Origin: The point of intersection of a vertical and horizontal axes of a Cartesian plan. The coordinates are (0,0).
Unit Rate: A comparison of two measurements in which the second term has a value of 1 (Example: 25 miles per 1 hour).
