MRS. THISTLE'S THOUGHTS
Hello Everyone,
We are off to a great start to the school year! As some of you may know, the staff at Endeavor Elementary are such a fabulous group of dedicated teachers. Each day they work very hard to support and nurture your child. This year we will be incorporating science and social studies into our daily curriculum. We are hopeful that students will enjoy these hands-on learning experiences.
The Endeavor PTO does a fabulous job planning for fun activities in our school. Please feel free to attend the next meeting. If you are unable to attend the meetings, but would like to volunteer in our school, please contact your child’s teacher.
Through modeling, coaching and positive reinforcement, we are working to help students make good choices at school. At this point in our year, teachers have reviewed classroom and school-wide expectations for students. This year we have also incorporating social-emotional learning with our guidance trade books. Mrs. Brown, our Guidance Counselor put together a whole bin of books that teachers can select if they feel that their classroom needs to read a story to help them address some social-emotional needs.
If you have concerns that need to be addressed, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, the Endeavor Lead Teacher- Jody Steinhaus or myself. Have a wonderful month!
All the best,
Salina Thistle

NOTES FROM THE OFFICE
The school doors open at 7:50 am. Classes start at 8:00 am. If your child arrives after 8:05 am they will be marked TARDY. Breakfast is served from 7:50 am until 8:05 am. Bus riders are dismissed at 2:50 pm and the busses depart at 3:00 pm. Walking/carpool students will be dismissed at 3:00 or after the buses leave the school.
Reporting an Absence--
Please contact the office by 8:15 am if your child will be absent from school. If a phone call, phone message, or email is not received stating that your child is out by 8:15 am, safety calls will be made to insure that your child is safe. This is for the safety and well being of all students.
Parking--
Remember to please park in the parking stalls and not in the driveway. You may also park down at the Civic Center for drop offs and pick ups. The busses need to be able to get in and out of the driveway without driving on the curbs and grass. This is a safety precaution.

School Bus Safety
Motorists must wait when red lights are flashing!!
School is starting and we would like to remind you, “When is a motorist supposed to stop for a school bus that is displaying flashing red lights?”
School buses will have a flashing red signal if they were manufactured before Sept. 1, 1992. School buses manufactured after that date have the flashing red signal lights and a stop signal arm, a stop sign that extends out from the bus when the flashing red lights are activated.
Motorists who are traveling the same direction as the school bus must stop behind the school bus regardless of how many lanes are on the highway or in the parking lot. Drivers can proceed past the school bus once the red lights are turned off.
Motorists who are traveling the opposite direction as the school bus only need to stop before passing the school bus if it is a two-lane roadway—one lane of traffic for each direction— and the highway is not divided. Drivers can move past the school bus once the red lights are off.

ART WITH MS. MARTENS
Hello Parents!
We’ve been busy in the art room working on an art exhibit based on the book Only One You by Linda Kranz. All of the students at Endeavor Elementary painted their very own unique rock fish after reading the book. On Friday, each rock was placed carefully in its “school” of fish outside of the front doors. Students were so proud of their fish. I hope that when you visit Endeavor Elementary soon you will stop and take a peek at the colorful creations.
Sincerely,
Your Friendly Art Teacher,
Mrs. Martens
P.S. If you would like to donate any of the following items to the art room it would be much appreciated! Just send them with your child to school and place in the art room.
Plastic Table cloths with fuzzy underneath
Rolls of colored duct tape
A good teacher stapler with staples
Yarn
Wooden popsicle sticks
Masking tape
Fabric cooking aprons-to use as art smocks
Puffy paint

THERE'S ONLY ONE YOU
Some can fly higher than others,
But each one flies the best that it can.
Each one is different.
Each one is special.
Each one is beautiful.
NURSING NOTES WITH NURSE HON
Head lice
Everyone dreads these two words, “head lice”. Head lice are a nuisance and do not spread disease. Portage Schools protocol is when students are found to have live head lice and or nits, parent or legal guardian contact will be made to notify you of the finding and to come pick your child up from school. A handout about how to get rid of head lice will be given to you at the time of pick up. A child must be treated before returning to school. Upon return to school, the child must have a head lice check in the main office. If live lice are found, the child will again be sent home. Please call the office or send a note with the type and date of treatment used. Follow all directions on the package of the head lice treatment product each time you treat.
All people in the household should have their heads checked for lice. Often, it is the adults in the house who also have head lice but are overlooked in the treatment process. Cleaning of the environment is critical. Vacuuming and washing fabric items should be done for areas the person with lice has been in the past 2 days.
The custodians have cleaning schedules for each area in our district. This process includes washing hard surfaces and vacuuming floors.
Please talk with your children about your expectations not to share hats, combs, brushes, hair items, and to be considerate of personal space. A high five is a great alternative to a hug. For students with long hair, consider a braid or holder to keep the hair pulled back. Parents should develop a routine for checking their child’s head for lice daily or at least every few days.
The school nurse is available to you as a resource, please do not hesitate to call for support and guidance. Mrs. Hon covers all elementary buildings and may be reached at 608/742-4867, ext 4131, 608/697-4912, or honv@portage.k12.wi.us

COUNSELOR'S CORNER WITH MS. BROWN
DAILY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE!!
Kids who have good daily attendance that begins in Primary/Elementary School, are more likely to master reading skills by 3rd grade, have positive social interaction with their peers, graduate and find success in their jobs/careers.
Some absences are unavoidable, we can’t control when our kids get a fever! Yet we can do a few things to help our kids (and us!) have a smooth start to our mornings;
-Make sure our little ones are getting 10-11 hours of sleep.
-Lay out clothes the night before.
-Sign any papers or agendas the night before.
-Pack backpacks the night before.
It is also important to have a backup plan for getting the kids to school, just in case they miss the bus, or the neighbor or relative that usually picks them up cancels at the last minute.
We want your kids at school every day! They are missed by their teachers and their classmates when they are absent!
