AVID Freshman
The theme of AVID 9 this quarter is HOW TO GET A JOB! They read an article and looked at samples of an effective high school resume. Then they created an outline and started typing up their own resumes. They will also be learning how to type a cover letter and send a professional e-mail.
The last part of this project will be to prepare and participate in a mock job interview. They will prepare and practice their responses to common interview questions. On Wednesday, March 6th will be our mock job interviews. They will dress professional and enact participating in a job interview.
AVID Sophomores
For our AVID sophomores, the theme of 3rd quarter is LEADERSHIP. They started by exploring what leadership can be and the different ways leadership can be demonstrated. They took notes about different leadership styles and reflected on their own leadership strengths. They started working on their Spirit of Giving project. The students were given the option of working independently or working in a small group. They are tasked with choosing a cause that is meaningful for them and choosing a way they can donate their time and compassion to use their leadership skills to perform an act of community service. In April, after they return from Spring Break, they will reflect on their project and create a presentation to the class to share what they accomplished, how they made a difference, and what they learned.
AVID Juniors
The AVID juniors have TWO big projects they will be focusing on this quarter. The first, that they are currently working on, is writing their College Personal Statement. This is an essay that they will use to apply for colleges and scholarships in the fall. A College Personal Statement is meant to share with admission officers and scholarship selection committees more personal information what cannot be obtained by looking at someone's academic record.
Before spring break, our juniors will be practicing and preparing to take the ACT College Entrance Exam. This exam will be proctored at Chandler High School, during the regular school day on Thursday. April 11th.
AVID Seniors
Our AVID Seniors are working a LOT this quarter! Most have already completed the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) to be able to receive grants and subsidized loans to help pay for college. They also have three scholarship applications due this quarter.
The seniors have also been busy writing their AVID Senior Speech. They were given a choice of two prompts from AVID and will present their speeches in front of the class in February. If they choose to, I will send a copy of their speech video to AVID. If they are selected, they may have the opportunity to speak at an AVID Summer Institute to thousands of AVID educators with travel expenses paid, earn a $500 college scholarship, and a letter of recommendation from the AVID CEO Mr. Thuan Nguyen, Ph.D..
AVID Resources for Chandler High School Educators
This school year, one of the goals of the AVID/MYP Site team is to share the FIVE Phases of the Focused-Note Taking Process. In a previous newsletter, I shared descriptions of the first 3 phases. This quarter we are focusing on the 4th Phase: Summarizing and Reflecting on Learning
Phase 4: Summarizing and Reflecting on Learning
Think about the notes as a whole. Pull together the most important aspects of your notes and your thinking about them to craft a summary that captures the meaning and importance of the content and reflects on how the learning helps you meet the note-taking objective.
Please go to our AVID/MYP CHS Staff Resources Google Classroom for more content and resources for different ways you have have your students process their notes and connect their thinking
