Walzem Elementary Library
January 2016
Happy new year!
We have had a great start to this new semester! Remember, along with reading for 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade Battle of the Books, students in Kinder through 5th grade can log reading hours for the Six Flags Fiesta Texas Read To Succeed program to earn a free ticket to use during the summer.
In January, the library was utilized for robotics, staff meetings, and special events like Bluebonnet voting!
2nd grade Fairy Tale Bowl Kick-0ff!!
Ms. Hill's class won our English Fairy Tale Bowl in March 2015!

Circulation of Resources
Students, staff, and parents have access to our library resources from school, home, and on mobile devices. This includes print books, e-books, audiobooks, and databases through our library's LibGuide. Here are this month's circulation numbers for check-outs of physical items through the library:
PreK & EC- 196
Kinder- 195
1st- 129
2nd- 760
3rd- 497
4th- 597
5th- 335
Teachers- 187
Total: 2,896
OverDrive e-books/audio books/read-alongs: 149
Number of Students on passes by Grade
We had 386 students sign in to the library on passes this month. Instead of a paper sign-in, students are now using an iPad to fill out a Google form. This is a learning process, therefore some students did not sign in, other students did not submit their form, and some students selected two grades instead of one, which accounts for the extra entries on our graphs.
Instruction
Our library is committed to helping our students to develop a love of reading, but also to reinforce classroom learning. Besides teaching library skills, and integrating technology, the librarian also holds read-alouds and lessons with activities for PreK, Kinder, and 1st grade classes.
PreK: Winter season, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Objects in the sky
Kinder: Winter season, Rocks: properties and uses, Water, Chinese New Year
1st: Winter season, Fairy tales, Fables, Chinese New Year
Upcoming Events
In the month of February our library will be collecting reading logs for the Six Flags Fiesta Texas Read to Succeed program, which are due on the last Friday of the month. We will also be closed February 22-24 for Inventory.
