January 2016

Happy new year!

We have had a great start to this new semester! Remember, along with reading for 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade Battle of the Books, students in Kinder through 5th grade can log reading hours for the Six Flags Fiesta Texas Read To Succeed program to earn a free ticket to use during the summer.

In January, the library was utilized for robotics, staff meetings, and special events like Bluebonnet voting!

2nd grade Fairy Tale Bowl Kick-0ff!!

The librarian met with the 2nd grade classes to officially kick-off our Fairy Tale Bowl! This program introduces students to the differences between fairy tales and folk tales and exposes students to quality, traditional literature. Teachers and students are excited to begin reading these titles. There are ten books the students will read and be quizzed over on March 4th. The dual language/bilingual classes will compete against each other in Spanish, and our monolingual/ESL classes will compete against each other in English. The titles for the two groups are different, and they will find that the books are very different from what they may have seen in Disney movies! Our campus competitions will take place on March 11, 2016.

Ms. Hill's class won our English Fairy Tale Bowl in March 2015!

Bluebonnet Voting!

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders were challenged with reading 5 or more of the 20 Bluebonnet books at the beginning of this school year. On January 29th the voting booth came out and students who qualified were able to vote for their favorite Bluebonnet book! Participating students received a Bluebonnet pencil, Oreo cookies, water, and a reading or Texas-themed silicone band. Those that read 10 or more of the Bluebonnet books also received a color-changing Bluebonnet cup!

These three 5th graders each read 11, 13, and 16 of the Bluebonnet books, respectively. Great job!

Working on the Smart Board

PreK and Kinder students always enjoy their time in the library because not only do they get to hear a fun story, watch educational videos, and check out great books, but they also get to play/work on the SmartBoard! This month students sorted items relating to winter or summer. Joisy Vasquez from Ms. Zarate's kinder class participated in our Winter/Summer sort.

Retirement Celebration

Thank you to Ms. Susan Craig for her 25 years of service to Walzem Elementary! Ms. Craig retired January 29th, and the staff rallied together to send her off on new adventures with a celebration in the library. Ms. Craig was an essential member of our office team and will be greatly missed!

Family Math & Science Night

On January 14th Walzem hosted a family math and science night for all students Prek through 5th grade. The different grade levels were stationed either in the cafeteria, the library, or in the new gym. There were fun activities and games played at each location and it was great to see parents and families involved in students' learning.

Number of Students on passes by Grade

We had 386 students sign in to the library on passes this month. Instead of a paper sign-in, students are now using an iPad to fill out a Google form. This is a learning process, therefore some students did not sign in, other students did not submit their form, and some students selected two grades instead of one, which accounts for the extra entries on our graphs.

Instruction

Our library is committed to helping our students to develop a love of reading, but also to reinforce classroom learning. Besides teaching library skills, and integrating technology, the librarian also holds read-alouds and lessons with activities for PreK, Kinder, and 1st grade classes.

PreK: Winter season, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Objects in the sky

Kinder: Winter season, Rocks: properties and uses, Water, Chinese New Year

1st: Winter season, Fairy tales, Fables, Chinese New Year
