Bienvenue à l'Ecole!

Au plaisir de vous voir pour l'année scolaire 2019-20...

From the Principal

Salutations aux familles de Charlemagne!

On behalf of our school staff, it's my pleasure to extend a warm and personal welcome back to school. We hope you enjoyed an outstanding summer full of fun activities, family time, and maybe even a little language practice!

I'm thrilled to be back for my second year as your principal. I can't wait to see students in just a few short weeks, ready to embrace their language learning and continue on their path to global citizenship as emerging bilinguals.

Language is our bridge and our tool for considering deeply human questions. We can examine perspective and experiences, and gain a better understanding of difference and belonging, privilege and ability, acceptance and conflict. Learning another language and embracing the responsibility of communication allows us to more fully practice compassion, love and tolerance-- ideals we so profoundly need to see reflected in our world.

We always have chances to practice these skills and to make a difference in each others' lives. One of the ways we will live this vision in 2019-20 is by welcoming our new LifeSkills program. Teacher Paula McCowan will be joining our staff along with additional classroom aides. She is eager and excited to help students in her program form connections and build relationships and we look forward to the same! In the meantime, we encourage you to talk to your students about the new program and how to connect with those who have different abilities. Some resources include this short film and this thoughtful article.

In addition to Mme Paula, we also welcome Mmes Jocelyn Mendelssohn and Suzy Garver:

  • Jocelyn Mendelssohn comes to our 5th grade from Springfield Public. Jocelyn is a highly experienced teacher committed to exploring different ways of "doing school," developing integrated curriculum units, and facilitating student leadership via social entrepreneurship. As Jocelyn puts it, 5th grade is her "jam" and we are beyond excited to have her join our staff.

  • Suzy Garver is a name you may know-- Suzy was a bilingual educational assistant at Charlemagne in previous years. It's always gratifying when our EA's decide to pursue careers as classroom teachers and we are thrilled to have Suzy back in 1st grade, teaching part-time with Mme Sara Roadman. Suzy is familiar to many students and knows our school. She will make a great addition to the 1st grade team!

We have a lot to celebrate in the year ahead! New programs, a renewed focus on French Language Arts and English Language Arts integration, a continuation of additional academic supports, and a new position to support student behaviors are just a few examples of the exciting work that lies ahead.

I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming days and weeks, and especially at our social on September 3. As always, it is truly my honor to be with you at Charlemagne.

Nous espérons que vous passez une année excellente!

With gratitude and respect,

Courtney Leonard

Back-to-School Meet and Greet

On Tuesday, September 3, please join us for our back-to-school event:

At 2:15 pm, all new families in grades 1-5 are invited for an orientation and tour.

At 3:00 pm, all classrooms are open for returning students and kindergarten families. In the classroom, plan on picking up your student's profile, the fee sheet, and yearly permission forms. We'll have tables in the front hallway and office where you can drop completed paperwork.

At 3:30 pm, please join us on the playground for a school social.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

First Day of School: Wednesday, September 4

The first day of school, Wednesday, September 4, is important for all students. Classroom doors open at 8:20 a.m. and school begins at 8:30 a.m. for all students. Students should be in their classrooms for attendance before the final bells rings.

If you know your student will be late or absent the first day-- or anytime during the school year-- please call the 24-hour attendance line: 541-790-7092.

Kindergarten students will mix the first week of school and 1st grade will mix the first few days in order for teachers to consider the best match for classroom placement. Second through 5th grade students will start with their classes on Wednesday morning.

School Supplies: What Do You Need?

From each student, Charlemagne requests a $50 dollar contribution plus two boxes of tissue; your contribution helps us buy all the supplies your student needs for class and allows every students the same access to materials. Your contribution also helps cover class field trips, technology maintenance, and printing costs.

Your contribution can be made on Tuesday, September 3 during the back-to-school event. Please bring cash or check only.

Please direct questions about your contribution to Bernadette in the office. You may also email her at conover_b@4j.lane.edu.

Class Lists Posted Friday, August 30

Class lists for students in grades 2-5 will be emailed out by Friday, August 30. We will also have copies available in the front office. Kindergarten class lists will be available on Friday, September 13 and 1st grade lists will be ready the end of the first week of school on Friday, September 6.

As a friendly reminder, we do not make changes to our class lists based on parent request. Teachers carefully compile lists each spring based on myriad factors, both academic and social. Thanks for your understanding and support!

Keeping Information Up-to-Date

During the first week of school, your student's teacher will send home a copy of your student's profile from our information system. Please make any changes and sign the form on the back. Even if you don't have any changes, please do return the form. Your classroom teacher will provide you the date.

If you have moved or you need to update other address information, please bring in the following original documents:

1. A lease, mortgage or tax documents

2. A piece of mail that reflects the new address, dated within the last 60 days

If you have questions about the sufficiency of your documents, please check with the front office.

Throughout the year, please keep us updated on new addresses, emergency contacts and release information. This saves a great deal of time and confusion for many situations that arise.

School Pictures Coming in October!

Mark your calendars now for Friday, October 18 for our annual school pictures.

Picture order forms with collection envelopes will be distributed in early October. Please make sure your student has completed a form to bring you-- you are also able to order online.

Our health screening, including vision and hearing-- usually done in conjunction with pictures-- will come later in December.

Protecting Time-- Classroom Instruction is Crucial!

Open and constructive communication is a key element to our shared success at Charlemagne.

As such, we respectfully request you call the office or email staff to arrange meetings.

Our teachers must give their full attention to their classrooms and cannot pause for a drop-in visit either before or after school. Please do contact your student's teacher with questions as most concerns are successfully mediated through direct communication.

Please check the calendar on our website and make note of no-school days. We encourage you to make your regular doctor and dentist appointments on no-school days and either before or after school.

On any school day you cannot pick up your student and need to make arrangements, please call the main office before 12:00 pm to insure a message is delivered to your student. After 12:00 pm, please understand we cannot guarantee your student will receive the message. Calls and messages to the classroom are disruptive to the learning environment and instruction... and we trust your students to remember their after-school plans!
