The Silver Laker

May 2023 Edition

They say April Showers bring May Flowers but Black Tiger Pride has been blooming and blossoming all year long!

Big picture
The month of May signals the end of State Testing as well as the start of some fun things happening here at SLE. We will continue our Black Tiger Pride Store, and although we are not quite as quick as Amazon Prime, we feel the students who are taking part in purchasing from the store with their Black Tiger Pride Tickets/Dojo Points seem to be enjoying it!

Morning Arrival

Doors will continue to open at 8:30am, regardless of temperatures or weather so plan accordingly. Thank you for all you do for our Silver Lakers!!

Reminder: the tardy bell rings at 8:45am.

April Top Tigers

Each month two students will be recognized at a Board Meeting for being Top Tigers. Top Tigers are exemplary in their character traits and their effort. What an honor it is to be recognized by your teachers at a Board Meeting. Proud of these Silver Lakers for all of their Black Tiger Pride!!

First Tee at SLE!

Representatives from First Tee of Greater Akron came out for several days to work with our Silver Lakers on some basics of golf. They taught them in ways to show the fun of golf and hopefully to get some interested in this fun activity that can stay with them for their lifetime! They even worked with the school to help so we could get some equipment to continue the fun!

All-City Art Walk

I love this event as we are able to showcase such immense talent from the entire district in the beautiful downtown area. While I wasn't able to get pictures of everything I loved what I was able to see and think that we have a very bright future for our students with their artwork! Thanks to all of our amazing art teachers, especially our very own Ms. Bittner for putting it all together:)

Lost and Found

Is your child missing a coat? A sweatshirt? Multiple items? They might be here in our lost and found. If there is something missing please have your child look here. If you know of something that is missing please call the school and describe it so we can see if it is here. If you'd like to set up a time after school to come check it out, we can set that up too. We just want to make sure all of these nice items find their way back home :)

Playground Use Outside of School Hours

Before School, we ask that no students be on the playground sets as there is not any supervision outside until the bell rings at 8:30am to allow students into the building.

After school, once students have joined their parents/guardians and are in their care and under their supervision, students may be on the playground sets. Again, this is an issue with supervision and we do not want anything to happen to our little Black Tigers.

Parents with students picking up younger siblings (HS or MS students): please have conversations regarding how they should not be playing on the equipment when Elementary School is still in session. I understand that older students get out earlier but that becomes a disruption to the end of the day here. I appreciate all of you help with this matter.

Parents: Please help us in monitoring students when playing after school. Our equipment was drawn/ written on underneath the slides in permanent marker. This could have been on a weekend so it might not have necessarily been a Silver Laker but I am hopeful that with staff and parent vigilance we can keep our equipment nice for a long time to come.

Student Council Earth Day Cleanup

On Earth Day, students from our SLE StuCo went out and helped to clean up around the outside of our property!

3rd Graders learn about Arbor Day

On Arbor Day, we had visitors from Silver Lake Village Park Board, family members of this year's tree dedication, a SLE parent who is an Arborist with Davey Tree and even Mayor Hovey! 3rd graders learned about the history of Arbor Day and the importance of trees and even were quizzed on the different types of trees based on leaf shape!

HSL Pastries with Peeps

Split into two, our Home and School League hosted an event first for K-2 families and then for 3-5 families where they could come in and have breakfast with their student(s). We love getting to have our Silver Laker Families involved in events where they can be together!

HSL Talent Show 2023

Home and School League helped put on this year's talent show. Roberts MS was gracious enough to allow SLE to borrow some sound equipment. We are thankful for all of the families who gave time to ensure our Silver Lakers were able to perform. Incredibly proud of our kids who showed bravery on top of many talents that night!

HSL Used Book Sale

Following a period of accepting donations of books, and help sorting from our SLE StuCo, Home and School League hosted a Used Book Sale where profits would be used to help SLE literacy programs! There was even a visit from some of the CFalls FD! Thanks to those who donated books, donated time or donated money in the form of buying books for a good cause :)
