CogAT Test
A reminder to all 6th-grade parents: Your child will be taking the CogAT Test (Cognitive Abilities Test) Wednesday, November 7th from 8:30-10:45 a.m. This test measures reasoning and problem solving skills in verbal, non-verbal, and quantitative areas. The CogAT will be used in combination with scores from MAP and AIR, as well as classroom grades, for junior high math placement using this MATRIX.
Please be sure that your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast Wednesday morning. Also, it will be very important that your child arrives on time to school Wednesday morning. Results from the CogAT will be returned from the district after the first of the year.
All 5th-grade students who are registered for the CogAT will also be taking the test on Wednesday, November 7th from 8:30-10:45 a.m. If your child is registered, please remind him/her. Every 5th grader signed up for the test will receive a pass from their homeroom teacher Wednesday morning and will report to the cafeteria for the CogAT.

PBIS at home - Be Safe
Being safe at school means having a calm body at all times, staying in your designated area, watching out for others around you, walking instead of running and using materials and tools correctly. This is extremely important in hallways, the cafeteria, the playground and on the bus, as well as in classrooms. Part of being safe at school also involves another one of our sayings, “If you see something, say something!” We want our students to feel emotionally safe as well as physically safe.
How does this translate to home? Having a calm body around the house or out in the community is important so no one gets injured. If your child is home alone, does he know what to do to be safe? Does she check to see that doors are locked? Does he know rules about answering the phone and what to say if someone calls?
When she is out in the community, talk about safe behavior and don’t be afraid to set limits! Remember, children need boundaries! Don’t forget to talk about what to do if they happen to find themselves in an unsafe situation. It can be a scary conversation, but one that is needed! Don’t forget to reward those safe behaviors when you see them or when your child tells you about a situation where he made a great choice. Being aware of your surroundings, looking at for others, and making great choices are life skills that will keep your children safe! Next week, we’ll look at how to “Be a Problem Solver” at home!

STRIKE UP THE BAND FOR HUNGER! Friday November 2nd, 2018 A food drive for Operation Give Back
What is “Strike Up the Band for Hunger”?
An opportunity for any community members, family, faculty, and students to watch Sycamore High School Marching Band perform their award winning 2018 show, “Prehistoric”, while helping fight hunger in our community!
How does this work?
Admission into the performance is two nonperishable food items. We are happy to accept additional nonperishable food items. No donation is required for elementary students and younger. Your donations will be delivered to Operation Give Back immediately following our performance.
Why is the Marching Band doing this?
The Sycamore Marching Band is a vibrant and vital part of the Sycamore Family. We experience such tremendous support from the Sycamore Community and this event provides us an opportunity to give back. This is a great opportunity to come out and support our community and see our Marching Aviators as they give a final performance before they compete in Mid States Band Association Championships.
