California History Social Science Project - Initiatives, Recalls & Referendums
California voters are able to exert great influence over the state's political landscape. This year's election includes seven statewide ballot measures like guaranteed abortion rights in the state's constitution, dedicated funding for arts and music education, and legalized sports betting. Have your students explore the latest issue of Initiatives, Recalls, and Referendums and try new activities designed to have them critically engage with the upcoming election.SDCOE Special Election Edition - Teaching About Voting and The 2022 Midterms
To help teachers, counselors, and administrators develop an environment that supports civil discourse and supports a positive climate, SDCOE gathered resources that can be used to discuss topics related to the Nov. 8 Midterm Elections. We have included some young children resources because you’re never too young to learn about your role in voting!
Integrated Action Civics Project Workshop Series
In this five-part Saturday morning workshop series, we will introduce strategies that can be integrated throughout your current curriculum to help students explore their sense of self, understand how power operates in historical and contemporary contexts, analyze the role of stakeholders, and learn about the ways that organizers advocate for and create social change
Spotlight
San Diego High School's IB History
Teachers at San Diego High School provide more books for students in their IB program.
Using the money from last month's Barnes & Noble event, Chelsea Taylor at SDHS created a reading corner for her former AP World History students who are currently taking Christopher Steussy's IB History course. She purchased extra copies of the IB History book list so her students could have access if they forget their books or if they want to read ahead.
Steussy, her former mentor teacher and current colleague, also purchased 17 copies of Jill Lepore's "These Truths" during the Barnes & Noble event. As his student teacher, Taylor fell in love with the course, curriculum, and books at the time.
Taylor convinced her sophomores, Mr. Steussy's current juniors, to take his IB History course by saying, "I sat in 6 years of classes at SDSU and 2 at USC. IB History is the best class I have ever sat in." She is proud of her students and is excited that they have joined SDHS's IB program.
