The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - January 3, 2021
A Note from Principal Welch
Dear Families,
Welcome Back and Happy New Year!! I hope the break from school allowed you to spend time with those you love and continue to build memories together. I hope our students were able to explore outside, I hope they were able to do something physically active, I hope they were able to help someone around the house with chores or even cooking. We are all finding new and important ways for learning to be embedded into our daily routines. Whether this time away kept you close to home or you traveled somewhere, welcome back and Welcome to 2021!
In this upcoming week, we have two events I want to speak to. On Thursday, we have our Materials Pick-up event AND our library book distribution. I begin with the materials pick-up event. You will read below there are times set for families to come to school based on your last name. There is also a time between 4:30-5:30 PM for families to come if their previous time didn't work for your family. Teachers are providing you supplies that will take you to late February. Additionally, you will likely find a special gift from the art docents and another from our PTA. It will be fantastic to see you all on Thursday afternoon as you drive through to pick-up supplies!!
On this same day, we also have our library pick-up/drop-off event. A special note regarding this week's library book pick-up. There will be NO afternoon curbside pick-up for library books. We will continue to have the bus deliver and pick-up books from our standard 4 stops, but NO curbside pick-up. Anyone who orders books with a curbside pick-up will pick up those books during your designated time below during materials pick-up. (We will add the bag of books to the materials.) If you have questions, please reach out to Mrs. Sterling or Ms. Welch.
One last special note about library books, we will happily accept anyone returning finished library books during the materials pick-up event, as well. Since the books need to sit in quarantine for a week before we can reprocess them, if you were able to enjoy books during the break, we would love to accept them back so we can work on adding them back to our circulation.
Finally, please look at the bottom of the newsletter for an update from our PTA President, Rachel Tarr. There are several items she has shared with you, including a short family survey we would love for you to complete.
I am looking forward to a marvelous 2021 and I do believe we will have a great year. We have an exceptional staff to support students and I couldn't imagine being on this journey with anyone else. I thank you for sharing your children with us at Cottage Lake!
I look forward to seeing your students online starting Monday and I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday at our Materials Pick Up event.
Take Care,
Jen Welch, Principal
•• SCHOOL NEWS ••
Materials Pick-up - January 7, 2021
Pick-up times will be as follows:
- Last names A-H, pick-up between 1:00-2:00 PM
- Last names I-O, pick-up between 2:00-3:00 PM
- Last names P-Z, pick-up between 3:00-4:00 PM
- Those families who couldn't come at the earlier times, 4:30-5:30 PM
To follow safety guidelines for everyone, here are important pieces of information for each family when they come to school:
- All families will need to pick up materials in their vehicle, via the front of the school, in our car pick-up loop.
- Prior to picking up, prepare a sign with your child’s LAST name written clear and BIG. Please display the sign on your passenger side of your dash, so that it is clearly visible to staff.
Our drop-off/ pick up will occur in front of the school, in our car pick-up loop. No parking is allowed.
Remain in a single file line along the curb. Continue pulling forward as you are able. There will be staff directing you.
If you happen to be picking up materials for another family, we need you to come back at that family’s designated time. We will only have bags out for the last name letters listed.
When you leave the school driveway and head back onto Avondale, please only turn RIGHT to keep traffic moving.
All staff will be wearing a face covering and maintaining social distancing to make sure we are doing all we can to keep each other and you safe.
What will you be picking up?
Teachers have been preparing items that you should anticipate using through mid-winter break.
** If you need other supplies that are not provided, please do reach out to a member of our office staff, or myself, and we will do our best to supply you with the needed materials. These items could include a student desk, an appropriate chair or alternative seating option, or if you need more school supplies. Please reach out if we can assist you in creating a workspace for your student that also matches their size.

i-Ready winter diagnostic
What you can do is encourage your child, assist in keeping them focused, help them to NOT rush or just click randomly. I want you to remember that about 50% of the test should be items that are challenging for them. The assessment will start with where they are placed currently after their fall diagnostic and also the online instruction students should be completing each week.
Thank you for your support!

Community Assistance
Need Technology?
Does your Cottage Lake Elementary student need a device for online learning? Please use the link below to sign up and sign the waiver. After you submit your form, Mr. Paganini will be in contact with you to set a pick-up time for you. For students in Kindergarten & Grade 1, we are issuing iPads. For students in Grade 2 through Grade 5, we are issuing Chromebooks. Students will keep these devices at home until we return to school.
Meals during remote learning and hybrid learning
Beginning Wednesday, September 9, we are offering free meals for ALL children ages 18 and younger. Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. This is GREAT news for each of our families; these are your tax dollars at work. I am so pleased this funding has been continued, allowing us to extend these meal services until the end of December.
