Although doors open at 9:00 a.m., parents may bring their child at anytime during the 9:00 - 12:00 window.
The process takes about 20 minutes plus any wait time.

Support Your Secondary Readers
Written by Glen Hopkins, SES Principal
Each month in the P2P Newsletter, I have taken time to provide suggestions on how to support your elementary child with reading or math. As I sit in my living room tonight, I look across the table to find my seventh grader and my first grader playing with some Legos together. It just hit me, I need to share the love for our secondary students/parents. So, with that being said, let's jump into some tips for parents of secondary (jr. high and high school) students.
As your child's first and most important teacher, you play a huge roll in the success of your child's continuous journey to becoming a "master reader." By the time our children hit the secondary level, they could be at a variety of reading levels: proficient, reluctant, or struggling. Regardless of what level your child read's at, and in all honesty, regardless of their age, your positive support can only help them to grow their talents. Here are some suggestions on how you can provide support at home:
- Create a quiet reading space in your house. At the secondary age, bedrooms are great, as long as they can take time to disconnect from their iPhones!
- Set a good example for your child by reading books, magazines, or newspapers. Also, take some time to talk about what you are reading. Secondary students have a lot of wonderful thoughts and ideas that they can share with you. (It also gives you the chance to iron out some misconceptions they may have.)
- Be aware of your child's interests and needs. Reading things like comic books, instruction books, sports, or fashion magazines may very well be the key to unlocking a joy of reading!
- This one is hard.... which I definitely struggle with.... but take time to turn off the TV one night a week to read as a family. It's a small step, but it shows the importance of reading and allows you to the time to talk about what you are reading. Let's be honest, don't we all want our secondary children to talk to us more?
- If your child is struggling with reading something for school, help them! When they were in elementary school, you took turns reading and discussing the content. Now that they are at the secondary level, why should it stop? It can make your secondary child feel empowered when they get to sit down and read with you, seeing that you truly don't know everything! (Isn't this their dream situation as a teenager anyway?)
- Finally, emphasize reading as a life-long habit. Reading can unlock new worlds and experiences. It can also unlock some great conversations.
Check out this month’s STEAM FAMILY CHALLENGE on our website! What can you use from NATURE to design and build your own prototype? Do you ever see evidence of animals using materials from nature to build? Find a natural engineer in nature and take notes - birds’ nests, beavers’ dams - did you know a squirrel’s home is called a dray? Get outside and explore!
