Your Mission: Week six
ELA Lesson 1
GOAL: To understand aspects of and how to write persuasive body paragraphs.
First...LAUNCH:
- Look at the OREO anchor chart and begin thinking about what should be included in a persuasive body paragraph.
- Based on the elements included on the anchor chart, write down some similarities and differences between persuasive body paragraphs and informational or narrative body paragraphs.
Next...EXPLORE:
- Find your completed Persuasive Writing Planner from last week's ELA Lesson 3 (pictured on the left).
- Watch the video lesson below to learn more about writing body paragraphs.
- While watching the video, start thinking about the parts of a body paragraph and how you could take the pieces of your planner and turn them into body paragraphs.
Last...LANDING:
- Think back to your planner and your decision on whether technology makes life better or worse.
- Using your planner complete the body paragraph graphic organizer that goes along with your decision. If you feel technology makes life worse, complete the assignment called "Technology Makes Life Worse". If you feel that technology makes life better complete the assignment called "Technology Makes Life Better".
- Once you have the assignment that goes along with your decision, work through piecing together a body paragraph using the options provided. If you need the directions read aloud or are having trouble, go back to the video lesson and listen to the directions again.
- Submit your work to your teacher using their preferred method.
ELA Lesson 2
GOAL: To understand the parts of and the ways to write a persuasive introduction.
First...LAUNCH:
- Look at the Hook Anchor Chart to the left to preview examples for our writing piece.
- As you read through the different hooks, write down on a piece of paper whether you think it would belong with a paper that thinks technology is making life better or with a paper the thinks technology is making life worse.
- Keep this paper with you when you watch the video lesson to see how many you got right.
Next...EXPLORE:
- Watch the video lesson below about writing persuasive introductions.
- While watching the video, pay close attention to the pieces you need to include in an introduction and how to write a thesis statement.

ELA Lesson 3
GOAL: To understand the parts of and how to construct a persuasive conclusion.
First...LAUNCH:
- Look at the Dos and Don'ts of Persuasive Conclusions Anchor Chart.
- After reading the "dos" and "don'ts" create a Venn Diagram for yourself to compare the parts of an introduction and the parts of a conclusion. Add any extra details you think are important to note.
- Keep these ideas in the back of your mind as you go through today's lesson.
Next...Explore:
- Watch the video lesson below on how to write a persuasive conclusion.
- While watching the video, pay close attention to the things you should include in your conclusions to make an impact on the reader and get your point across.
- Pay attention for the "dos" and "don'ts" listed in the anchor chart as you watch the video.
Last...LANDING:
- Complete the Persuasive Conclusions Comparison assignment by recalling the things you should include in a conclusion and the things you should leave out.
- When completing the assignment, make sure that your response is in paragraph form AND includes evidence from the sample conclusion and today's lesson.
- Submit your work to your teacher using their preferred method.
MATH LESSON 1
UNIT 8 KEY MATH VOCABULARY
MATHEMATICAL ACTIVATOR
Here we go...check it out!
*Once you have determined the mystery number, double check the reasonableness of your solution with a family member.
* Jot down the mystery number and be on the lookout for it throughout the S'more. Make sure you read carefully...the answer could be anywhere in this math lesson! :)
GOAL: MATHEMATICIANS WILL BE ABLE TO DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A POLYGON AND A NON-POLYGON.
First...LAUNCH:
- Once you have completed the Math Activator and reviewed the Unit 8 Vocabulary, you are ready to view the instructional video as it focuses on the attributes of a polygon and the different types of polygons.
- Have a piece of paper or whiteboard ready to work along with the video to gain a clearer understanding as the attributes of a polygon are explained.
- Please feel free to pause the video and/or re-watch the video as often as needed, mighty mathematicians.
- What makes a shape a polygon? (Hint: there are 3 attributes)
You found it! The answer to the activator is... 0.875! :)
Next...EXPLORE:
- After you have completed viewing the instructional video, you will now be able to apply all of that mighty math knowledge you have about what a polygon is to the 3 tasks below.
- These are the same student tasks/assignments your classroom teacher has provided to you.
- **Note: Mathematicians, you will not be able to complete the entire flowchart after this lesson. For Lesson 1 focus only on the POLYGON and More than 4 Sides sections of the flowchart after this lesson. **
- ** Note: For the CSI activity, read the introduction of the case you're trying to solve this week. Then, you will only solve Crime Scenes 1 & 6 today.
- Make sure to write down your answers for each crime scene on a piece of paper so you can solve the mystery at the end of the week!
CSI Review Activity
CSI: Scene 1
CSI: Scene 6
Last...LANDING:
- Reflect on this lesson where you learned more about the attributes of a polygon and the different types of polygons.
- Complete the two questions on this exit ticket.
- Please submit your exit ticket, Polygon Flow Chart, and CSI: Scenes 1 & 6 to your classroom teacher following the directions they have provided to you.
Math Lesson 2
MATHEMATICAL ACTIVATOR
*Once you have cracked the code, share it with a family member. Do they agree?
* Jot down your cracked code and be on the lookout for it throughout the S'more. Make sure you read carefully... the answer could be anywhere in this math lesson! :)
GOAL: Mathematicians will discover how the 4 sided polygons, quadrilaterals, have specific attributes that make them unique.
First...LAUNCH:
- Once you have completed the Math Activator and reviewed the Unit 8 Vocabulary, you are ready to view the two instructional videos that focus on the different quadrilaterals and their attributes.
- Have a piece of paper or whiteboard ready to work along with the videos to gain a clearer understanding of the different types of quadrilaterals and their attributes.
- Mighty Mathematicians, just remember that you can pause the video and/or re-watch the video as often as needed.
- What attributes does a quadrilateral have to make it a polygon?
- What are the different types of quadrilaterals?
- Why is a trapezoid a very unique quadrilateral?
- Can I compare and contrast the different types of quadrilaterals?
Next...EXPLORE:
- After you have completed viewing the instructional videos, you will now be able to apply all of your mighty math knowledge through the 3 tasks below.
- These are the same student tasks/assignments you classroom teacher has provided to you.
