Congratulations to Amber Thorne - a College Board Award Recipient
Congratulations to our own Amber Thorne who is one of many students from across the country to earn academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs! These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them stand out during the admissions process. Colleges and scholarship programs use these honors to identify students from underrepresented groups through College Board’s Student Search Service.
Amber earned this recognition by excelling on her PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP Exams and in her classrooms. Students who may be eligible have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams; and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town. Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year, and are awarded at the beginning of the next school year.
New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Zone 2 Area All-State Festivals
This year two of our Gananda students have been chosen to participate in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Zone 2 Area All-State Festivals. This is the first time that the Area All-State Festival is being held since 2019. In order to be selected for the honors ensembles students need to perform at a Spring NYSSMA solo festival. At the solo festival the students perform scales, a prepared piece and a sight-reading excerpt.
Our students’ scores were then compared with students, on like instruments, located throughout our zone. We are in Zone 2 which contains the following 8 counties: Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Monroe, Livingston, Ontario, Seneca and Wayne. There were hundreds of applicants for each ensemble. The highest scoring students were selected for the Area All-State ensembles.
High School students selected include:
Cadence Strausser (10th grade - trumpet) - Sr. Area All-State Orchestra (2nd time selected for the area all-state festival; ranked 5th overall; 1st Gananda student to ever earn a spot in the Sr. Area All-State Orchestra)
Claire Dohse (9th grade - clarinet) - Jr. Area All-State Band (1st time selected for area all-state band; seated 9th overall)
The Jr. Area All-State festival will take place at Bloomfield Central School the weekend of November 4-5.
The Sr. Area All-State festival will take place at Gates-Chili Senior High School the weekend of November 18-19.
Congratulations to these talented, hard-working students!
