NEW! February is Black History Month
It is a time to recognize Black heroes, Black innovators, Black changemakers, and reflect on the impact so many have had throughout our history and for us today. Take time to explore and enjoy a Black History Month Exhibit (created by The Book Wrangler). PUSD put together a slide deck of resources to promote Black History Month across the curriculum. Here at Mesa Verde, we will be participating in the 23rd National African American Read-In by reading books across the genres written by Black authors. MVMS Eagles will have the opportunity to read, recommend, and promote the books they read. Established in 1990 by the National Council of English Teachers Black Caucus, the National African American Read-In has developed from being a solely instructional event to a celebration of the lively contributions and essential role African American literature, art, and artists play in American society. Well over 5.9 million people throughout the globe have taken part in this campaign (source); this year will mark our first year in participating. We are highlighting the National Council of Teachers of English recommendations and other Black authors we have in our library. If you would like to add to our collection for the African-American Read-In, you can use our Amazon Wish List as a guide.

On Friday, March 3rd from 11:30-1:00 p.m. we are planning a Career Fair in our gymnasium. There are 16 career clusters to explore! With so many different career clusters and pathways within those clusters we want to broaden our students' horizons and open their minds to the many opportunities that abound.
Can we count on you? We are looking for parent volunteers and community members who represent the above mentioned career clusters both at the professional (4-year college degree or more) and the paraprofessional (apprenticeship, certificate, 2-year college degree) levels.
We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about their career and want to share that enthusiasm with middle schoolers! Students will want to know:
- Why did you choose this career?
- What training did you receive and where you went to college (if applicable)?
- If you could wave a magic want what is one thing you'd like to change about your career
- What is one thing you just love about your career?
*Students LOVE visuals, manipulatives and free stuff so bring your pens, pencils, frisbees, hats, water bottles, keychains, stickers, buttons, etc. Each student will receive a MVMS drawstring backpack at check-in.

COUNSELING CORNER
GENERAL INFORMATION
The difference between a Guest, a Visitor and a Volunteer as per the PUSD Board Policies.
1. A Visitor is defined as an individual who, with school district authorization, attends a student performance, special event, festival, open house, back-to-school event, sports event, athletic competition, etc. A visitor may either be accompanied or unaccompanied by school district staff. Designated school district administrative personnel are to make this determination. A visitor is usually not required to sign a registry.
Example: Your school is being recognized for achievement and members of SDCOE are coming to watch students or your school is hosting a Jr. Olympic competition.
2. A Guest is defined as an individual who, with school district approval, assists students, schools, and teachers on a non-regular basis or who individually observes a classroom or activity. A guest may also assist with educational programs or with special events on an occasional or infrequent basis. A guest shall immediately report his or her presence at the school office or at the designated school location upon arrival at the school and sign a guest registry.
Example: Your school is hosting the book fair, a play where parents are coming to watch, or a teacher needs help in the classroom with a one- or two-day tie-dye t-shirt project for the jog-a-thon. A class is hosting a party or a fun run.
3. A Volunteer is defined as an individual who, with school district authorization, voluntarily assists school districts, schools, educational programs, or students on a regular and ongoing basis. A volunteer is required to complete a Volunteer Application and have a Megan’s Law Background Check or a State and/or Federal Background Check completed.
Example: A parent is assisting with a weekly and ongoing project such as the running club or Lego league. A grandparent is helping in music or art classes weekly. A field trip chaperone and/or driver (usually requires Level 1 and 2 applications).
If someone is coming to help in the class only one or two times, they are not considered volunteers therefore do not need to fill out a Level 1 application.
