Druid Hills High School

Week at a Glance - September 5

Faculty Meeting Tomorrow - 3:30pm - Media Center

Adopt - A - School -- Please consider giving!

Druid Hills High School has adopted the students and staff of Wisdom High School. Wisdom is a diverse school (55% are English Language Learners) of over 1,800 students, nearly all of whom are on free and/or reduced lunch. According to their Principal, many of the students lost everything in the recent floods.

We are asking the Druid Hills High community to donate gift cards through September 15 to be distributed to the staff and families impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The gift cards can be from Sam's/Walmart, Costco, Target, Home Depot, or a Visa - no amount is too small. The Main Office will also accept monetary donations that will go directly to Wisdom.

I can think of no better way to celebrate homecoming by assisting others in rebuilding their homes and communities.

Thank you in advance!

Picture Day - September 7

9th-11th Grade Picture is Thursday, September 7. In order to distribute photo information, students will be reporting to Advisement after 1st period. The distribution will take 5-10 minutes. A bell will sound around 9:55 for students to head to 2nd period. More information will be shared by Ms. Emily Robinson during tomorrow's Faculty Meeting.

USSYP Program

The United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution in 1962 creating the UNITED STATES SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM (USSYP), a national initiative to provide a yearly opportunity for talented young people with demonstrated leadership abilities to deepen their understanding of America’s political processes and strengthen their resolve to pursue careers in public service. The USSYP brings the highest-level officials from each branch of government together with an outstanding group of high school students — two high school juniors or seniors from each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) — during an intensive educational program week held in Washington, D.C.

The program is merit-based and highly competitive. Each student will also receive a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. Now in its fifty-sixth year, the program has been fully funded since inception by THE HEARST FOUNDATIONS as an enduring commitment to preparing young people for citizenship and leadership in our participatory democracy. More than 5,500 strong, USSYP alumni serve the country in many ways.

Qualified applicants must be:

  • a junior or senior high school student;
  • able to show demonstrated leadership through public service in elected or appointed positions where they are actively representing a constituency in organizations that relate to government, public affairs, history and/or community service;
  • actively serving in qualified leadership positions;
  • enrolled in high school; and,
  • living in the state they will represent for the entire 2017–2018 academic year.

Please share the application with your qualified students. The deadline for application submission is Friday, September 22.Druid Hills did have a USSYP representative a few years ago - it would be great to send another!
