The Riverwalk Roar
November 10, 2019
Note from Dr. Compton
Pride,
I'm on the planning council for Leadership York County, which is a year-long leadership program that is managed by the York County Chamber of Commerce. Each month, we showcase different aspects of York County. November's theme was "education."
For the 2 years prior to this, I participated in a discussion panel regarding the choice options here in York County. This year, I had the pleasure of facilitating the discussion instead of sitting on the panel. Participating in this year's panel were representatives from York Prep, Legion Collegiate, Westminster Catawba, and Riverwalk Academy.
As a member of the panel, I've always walked away with a feeling of comradery after the discussion was over. I've even felt this when I set on a panel last year with the superintendents of the different districts in York County. I can't say this has been the same in different parts of the State where there's clearly no love lost between the local school districts and their choice counterparts.
Like mentioned, this year I had the pleasure of facilitating the discussion and I believe that the audience, about 30 members of the Leadership York County group, walked away with the knowledge that I hoped they would. They understand that charter schools are public schools and that the funding of charter schools is not equal to the funding of traditional public schools. They also now know that all funding doesn't follow the child, meaning, that the local funds that are allocated to each child do not follow that child from their home school to the charter school (or private school) that they attend.
There was one additional takeaway that took place that I've always felt, but now sitting away from the table, I was able to witness. No matter the school, Riverwalk, York Prep, Legion, Westminster, or the traditional local schools, we all share in the same goal; which is to improve the educational outcomes for the students in York County. We all recognize that one model doesn't fit all and that none of us have the "magic answer" that works for each student. Each of us has a role to play here in York County and each of us has mutual respect for each other and for the work that we're doing. Thanks for making your family's choice Riverwalk Academy.
Pride, let's have another outstanding week!
