District Updates!
Superintendent Gill shared:
Mrs. Gill led a discussion on technology plan and needs with the group. She shared;
Food Service
- District 186 currently has 12 schools that receive fresh fruit and vegetables through food service from a grant. Schools are also provided lessons for students on what are different types of fruit and vegetables and where they are grown. To build on this District 186 is learning about possibilities and seeking funding to possibly collaborate more with GenHkids, Chef Greg Christian from Beyond Green Partners, and Lincoln Land Community College to move to sustainable food service in school cafeterias. Some of the first steps is to provide education and training to kitchen staff on 'scratch cooking' and food waste.
Mrs. Gill led a discussion on technology plan and needs with the group. She shared;
- Currently: Elementary schools have many iPads and/or computers. Middle and High schools do not have as many computers for the students.
- Technology is a long term consumable that needs to be replaced after 3-5 years.
- Ongoing professional development is needed for staff with technology.
- District did pilot different Chromebooks last year to see if this was a viable & affordable way to get more technology to middle and high schools.
