Eleanor Roosevelt Holds First Annual SPARK Expo
Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School held its first-ever schoolwide SPARK Expo, with the help of the PTO, on Thursday, March 10. Families and their students filled the school for this exciting event which featured a mix of traditional Science Fair activities and SPARK projects.
Each student contributed a project that they created in SPARK class, led by teachers Terri Boileau and Terri Sherman, which included Crazy Coding Mouse Mazes (kindergarten), Animals in Action (1st-grade), Amazing Adaptation Adventures of Our World Travelers (2nd-grade), Engineered Mini Golf Mania (3rd-grade), Making "SENSE'ory of Brainy Input/Output Exploration (4th-grade), and Real World Recycled Robots (5th-grade)
The evening also featured more traditional science fair projects, which students created at home. The entries were judged by 21 National Honor Society and Science Club students from Pennsbury High School, who also served as junior mentors.
"This event would not have been possible without the amazing support of our staff at Eleanor Roosevelt and the PTO. We even had members of Pennwood Middle School's STEM program helping out, in addition to the high school. It was really more of a district event," said Ms. Boileau.
Pennsbury introduced SPARK as a fifth elementary school Special in the 2019-20 school year. SPARK stands for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through Perseverance, Application, Resilience, and Kinetic Knowledge. The program is designed to teach 21st Century Skills (collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking) at the elementary level to foster strong development of these skills throughout the educational journey.

NOVA Presents at Fallsington
Recently, the Network of Victim Assistance of Bucks County (NOVA) gave presentations to students at Fallsington Elementary School. In addition to learning about the valuable resources NOVA provides to Bucks County, kindergarten, 4th grade, and 5th grade students learned about personal safety, iSmart 101, and cyberbullying respectively.
Kindergarten students learned about personal safety. This included the importance of body boundaries and safe and appropriate touches or requests. Students were encouraged to listen to their feelings, say "no" assertively in unsafe situations, and tell a trusted adult if something is ever wrong. Stuffed animal Chester the cat helped provide examples of signs when someone does and does not want to be touched, and that your body belongs to you and no one else.
4th-grade students learned about iSmart 101, short for Internet Smart 101. They were presented with the importance of being a responsible digital citizen and protecting your personal information online. Students were encouraged to always guard their privacy by not sharing their passwords with anyone or posting any personal information online without a parent's permission. They were also presented with important tips, such as how to create a strong password versus a weak one.
5th-grade students learned about the important topic of cyberbullying prevention. They discussed the key differences between bullying and cyberbullying, the potential harm it can cause to others, how quickly it can spread, and how to prevent it and not participate.
NOVA is a proud Pennsbury Partner, and we are very grateful for the valuable information they shared with our students. Visit NOVA's website to learn more and receive 24/7 assistance.

PHS World Language Classes Raise Money for Ukraine
This week was National Foreign Language Week, and in conjunction with this event, all world language classes at Pennsbury High School are helping raise money to aid the humanitarian crisis currently happening in Ukraine.
All world language classrooms are currently "Blue Dot" zones where students can stop by and donate money for UNICEF. Coordinating with authorities, UNICEF is setting up "Blue Dot" safe spaces along key travel corridors in Belarus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, where families in transit can go for information and emergency services. Unicef staff at the centers will also work to identify unaccompanied and separated children and ensure their protection.
The department's goal is to raise $500 toward this effort by Friday, March 18. PHS students and staff are encouraged to stop by any foreign language class to donate what they can. No donation is too small. As an extra added bonus, the foreign language teacher who raises the most money wins a pretzel party for their classes.
Today, staff and students were also encouraged to wear yellow, blue, and/or sunflowers to stand in solidarity with Ukraine. Visit UNICEF's website to learn more and donate.
