A Message from Ms. Witley

Dear Selby Families,

This week we heard the announcement that we will not be returning to school. While this news was not surprising, it was still very hard to hear. I was hoping that students would somehow be able to go back for a little bit of closure. However, I trust the professionals that this is the right choice to keep all of us safe and I know that when we do return, we will appreciate it even more!

The past few weeks have been very busy for staff as we have been engaged in the staffing process for next year. While this is ever-changing, we are getting closer to determining our tentative staff organization. I hope to share this with you in the next week or two. Staff have also begun building class lists for next year. If you are moving, please let Mrs. Gallagher or myself know ASAP at

Don't forget about our Selby Virtual Talent Show. The talent show is open to all of our students from K-8 and submissions must be 1 minute or less. Your video or photo can be uploaded right into the google form at

Submissions are due by May 29th @ 4pm. Looking forward to seeing all of the Selby Star talent! Thank you to Mr. Spiers for pulling all of this together.

At this time, we are not able to retrieve personal belongings at this time (as per Public Health directive), in a collective effort to keep everyone safe and healthy. I will communicate a plan as this may change.

I am hoping to have the Little Caesars pizza orders delivered in the next week or two. We will do pick up with a Covid Protocol where you will pop your trunk and we can place your order in your trunk. More information will follow about this.

As well, we will be issuing refunds for any money collected for Parent Council hot lunches. Please give Norah Brien and Mrs. Gallagher time to work through these.

At this time I would like to send a Selby farewell to Ms. Monahan who has been with us to cover in Mrs. Richards grade 2/3 class. Ms. Monahan has done a great job and we are going to miss her!

If you need to get in touch with a staff member, Mrs. Gallagher or myself, please email the school at

Please take care of yourselves and each other. Stay healthy and well!

K. Witley

Loving Spoonful GROW Garden at Selby

With permission from LDSB and using guidelines approved by KFL&A Public Health, Loving Spoonful will plant donation gardens at a few schools and seed the remaining GROW gardens with a cover crop of peas and oats.

Selby will be planted with a cover crop. Planting cover crops is a simple, effective way to improve soil health and fertility. It requires little maintenance and aligns well with student workshop lessons on healthy gardens.

The GROW staff will have full responsibility for the garden in order to seed the garden with a cover crop which will be mowed and covered with plastic in the Fall for decomposing into the soil. This is to improve the soil health and fertility and requires little maintenance.

A sign will be posted for the public explaining why this is happening.
