Meat-Based Vs. Plant-Based Diets

Which is better for your body? For the environment?

Meat-Based Diets

People who are on Meat-Based diets are called Predans. A Predan is a person who also eats meat regularly and/or takes little vegetables/fruits, 2 billion people live on this diet and it requires more energy, land, and water resources than the other diet. In the last five months alone, the government says, 1,250 square miles were lost. (It shows that this diet is leading to the loss of land to build more factories.) Americans eat about the same amount of meat as we have for some time, about eight ounces a day, roughly twice the global average. There should be investment in livestock breeding and management, to reduce the footprint needed to produce any given level of meat.”

Plant-Based Diets

“Plant-based” refers to whole foods — beans, grains, fruits and vegetables, not processed foods that were once whole foods. 4 billion live on this diet and the total weight of food consumed is higher than in meat-based diets. Agricultural production consumes more freshwater than any other activity in the US and this diet is more sustainable than the meat based diet.

Some reasons people may consider Plant-Based diets are:

  • Plant Based diets help prevent Diabetes
  • Leads to lower blood sugar
  • Lowers the chance of developing a Cardiovascular disease
  • People on this diet weigh less
  • Leads to lower cholesterol
  • Increased vision
  • Healthier skin

Environmental Impacts

  • Both require nonrenewable fossil energy

  • Though some 800 million people on the planet now suffer from hunger or malnutrition, the majority of corn and soy grown in the world feeds cattle, pigs and chickens.

  • Some 40% of the world’s land surface is used for the purposes of keeping all 7 billion of us fed

  • Producing just one hamburger uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles.
