Biography
Katy Arnett, Ph.D., a Fulbright scholar, is currently Associate Professor of Educational Studies, St. Mary's College of Maryland. She began her educational career as a French teacher at the secondary level. Katy is the author of Languages for All: How to Support and Challenge Students in a Second Language Classroom and co-editor of Minority Populations in Canadian Second Language Education. Her interest in supporting students with diverse needs brought her to Canada over a decade ago. She has since been here over 55 times!

FAQ: Selecting Sessions
1. When can I select my sessions?
- Registrants can choose sessions starting February 1.
- Session selection closes at midnight on February 11.
- No problem! You can choose from open sessions at registration on February 14.
3. How do I make my session choices?
- Registrants will be emailed a special link by February 1.
- Follow the link, fill out the form and make your first and second session choices.
- You will receive an itinerary with your choices at registration on February 14.
- Everyone will get their first or second choice of sessions.
- Just let us know at the registration table on the 14th. If there is room in the new session, you can join in.
6. I don't know how to select sessions.
- You need to be registered first. See the bottom of the flyer for instructions.
- You will then be emailed a survey link. Open it and have fun choosing!

'Newborn' words and expressions in Chinese
With the influence of globalism, language contact happens every day, resulting in rapid growth of brand new words and expressions. We will explore this theory of neologism through examples and examine their etymology. With the understanding of language contact and lexicon borrowing, teachers can design the teaching of vocabulary so students can guess and create new words through a fun, creative model.

Nehiyaw cahkipeyihkanak: a holistic approach
Better known as the star chart, the Nehiyaw cahkipeyihkanak is a traditional format for teaching the Cree language. It is based on 44 symbols, 14 consonants and the 8 direction syllabic system, and incorporates cultural and philosophical teachings. Learn about this methodology and add another tool to your pedagogical toolbox.
