MODELING & TEACHING WORK READINESS
"It's easier to just work than to write sub plans!" - said by every teacher I know.
SUB PLANS SHOULD NOT BE LOST INSTRUCTION TIME
Yes, writing sub plans can be difficult, especially when you wake up sick. However, there are some simple things you can do to ensure student learning continues. Students see the value of many Work Readiness Skills by what we expect of them when we are not there. Set the tone for your classes that subs and class time are valued.
1. Have a sub notebook in your classroom.
2. Include a copy of the attendance sheet from Skyward with pictures (by list or by seating chart).
3. Leave learning targets for the sub to post on the board.
4. Make sure students have more work than can be completed in the class period. This may include enrichment or other skill building activities.
5. If the content instruction is not possible due to your absence, consider creating stand alone Career Exploration or Work Readiness activities that a sub or student leader can facilitate.
Here are a few resources that offer Career Exploration and Work Readiness Lessons:
AG EXPLORER - Virtual Field Trips with lessons and self-directed activities
SKILLS THAT PAY THE BILLS - Full lessons that you can pre-prep
DIGITAL REALITY FAIR - Self Directed Financial Literacy
WE ARE TEACHERS - 9 Awesome Activities
COMMON SENSE DIGITAL LITERACY - Unlock lessons with videos to share in Google Classroom
EDUCATION WORLD - Fun Friday and other lessons that can be adapted
CTE in ACTION
On Tuesday, FBLA held an Hour of Code event to engage students in Computer Science. This national event brings awareness to the importance of computer science in all industries and how easy it is to get started in a dynamic and high demand field. Claire Sindlinger, Marketing Manager for CodeHS, shared her experiences as part of a company that provides computer science curriculum. All business classes participated in Hour of Code activities this week.
