The Miller Minute

We #cando & #willdo our personal best to inspire excellence!

August 18, 2019

A note from Mrs. West

LaRue Miller Elementary is a school where staff and students #cando and #willdo their personal best to inspire excellence and change the world! If you are a new LME family or a returning one, you are welcomed here! We are looking forward to our best year yet!

At Miller, we develop leadership characteristics in our students. For the past 2 years, we have spent time developing these characteristics through a school-wide shared book study on the Pyramid of Success (Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success by Coach John Wooden). This year, we will continue school-wide book studies that highlight leadership characteristics.

As another layer, we will add CAMP time this year. All of our students will belong to a team that consists of Kinder through 5th grade learners. Once a day, every other week, your child’s team will meet for 45 minutes to learn and grow together with our counselor, art, music, and PE teachers (CAMP). They will play interactive games, participate in character lessons, and build community through teams. We are excited about this additional time for our learners!

The LME Staff considers it an absolute privilege to serve you and your families, and we cannot wait to get started! We are thankful for strong family support and welcome your input! Together, we are better!

Shannon West, Principal

You are welcome to walk your child to class on the first day of school. The overflow parking lot will be open (accessible through the staff parking lot). Doors will open at promptly 7:05 (no earlier)! Please make this a quick visit as our teachers have prepared a day full of fun for your child(ren).

The Rest of the week

To allow students to learn and practice procedures, we will expect them to enter the school without a parent / guardian starting Wednesday. Please say your good-byes and give hugs to your children before they enter the building. On Wednesday, we will have our 1st Miller Rally! Our learners will report directly to the gym. Personnel will assist with helping students find their way. Thursday and Friday, learners will report directly to the cafeteria or their classrooms, and personnel will be available to direct students.

Lunches this week

We LOVE visitors at LME, but we ask that you refrain from joining your child for lunch until Friday of this week. This is a BIG week of learning procedures and expectations for our students. Delaying your visit for lunch until Friday would be most appreciated!

Arrival and Dismissal

The 1st week of school is a learning week for new students (Kindergarteners, in particular), parents, and staff to LME! Arrival and dismissal takes a long time the first several days, and we are asking for your patience! Student safety is our #1 priority!

Parent University

Rather than traditional Parent Information Nights, as we have hosted in the past, we are hosting Parent University. This event will contain a variety of sessions that include social emotional support for learners, media safety, Education 3.0, the standards-based report card, bullying (what it is and what it isn't), Restorative Practices, and more! We are finalizing this event, so be on the lookout for more information. You won't want to miss it!

Don't worry! You can still get the information you want from Parent Information Nights. Each teacher or team of teachers have created videos with all the information you need! Be sure to check them out!

Volunteer Background Checks

If you plan to attend a field trip with your child or help in your child’s classroom this year, then you will be required to pass a background check. The background check is free and can be found at The process can take up to 3 weeks, so please do not wait until field trips are scheduled to complete this process.

We have an updated Raptor Software System and all of the previously scanned driver’s licenses have been erased. What does that mean for you? All visitors to campus will have to have their license rescanned this school year. You may have your license scanned any time.
