Starting 2023 Strong
Happy New Year! We hope you had a restful and fun-filled end to 2022. If you traveled during this break, we hope the joy that comes from your family and friend reunions outweighed any weather and travel-related challenges. I had the happiness to meet with former students of mine and to run into some of you during this break. These occasions remind me that connection goes beyond the physical walls of our school, and that connection shapes who we are in obvious and subtle ways.
With any new year that presents opportunities to pause, reflect, and set goals, we invite you to share with us any goals or resolutions you have set with your family. For myself, instead of New Year resolutions, I chose a word - imagination - to represent my focus for this year. For Mrs. Weiland, her word for this year is strength. Here is a link to provide some information about the word of the year: https://wildsimplejoy.com/personal-word-of-the-year-ideas/. We will be exploring how those words lead to our learning and action in the coming year. Please feel free to text or email us with your word or goals (nhanb@bsd405.org or weilandk@bsd405.org) so we can inspire and learn together.
Welcome back; we look forward to writing this new chapter with you and our families.
In partnership,
Kati & Betty

For our 5th Grade Families
Introducing Our Interim Counselor
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, our counselor Elise Geck, is recovering from a running injury and will be out of the office for a few weeks. We are lucky to have Ms. Maria (Masha) Oreshnikova who will be our interim counselor starting on 1/4 for the month of January. Recently she completed an assignment at Bellevue High School so she is familiar with our community and some of our families. Please see below for her introductory letter.
----------
Hi amazing Medina Community!
My name is Masha Oreshnikova, and I am thrilled to be (temporarily) joining your school! I am originally from Moscow, Russia, and in my Russian life, I used to be a teacher of English as a second language to adults. We moved to Washington in 2015 for my husband's job. Since early 2018, I have been a Bellevue School District employee, first working as a Site Supervisor for the District's Early Learning Program and currently providing services to students, parents, school staff, and community as an Interim School Counselor. At the moment, I’m also a senior school counseling graduate student at Seattle Pacific University, and I have less than half a year of grad school left, yay!
I earned my degree in teaching English as a second language from Moscow State Pedagogical University (Russia), and after that, I earned my M.S. in mental health counseling from Southern Arkansas University (Magnolia, AR.). So, technically, the degree I am working on right now is my third one (yes, I call myself a nerd every now and again😊).
In my free time… although, do I even have one? I have a 6-year-old daughter, grad school, and a job. I also love hiking, traveling, cross-country skiing, baking, spending time with my friends, and going on solo walks in Bellevue Botanical Garden with a cup of coffee in my hands.
I look forward to working with your students and getting to know them better!
