Afternoon Dismissal Safety Reminders!

Spring Creek Drive is currently on the city and county’s radar as it is in need of further safety improvements for students walking and biking to school. While we await these improvements, there is a small, but important step parents/guardians can do to help!

In addition to maintaining safe traveling speeds and watching for people along Spring Creek Drive, we could use your help at afternoon dismissal. We currently open our gates at 2:45pm for parents/guardians to access the back parking lot. We are noticing an increase in vehicles arriving before our back gates open, pause parking on the road and shoulder. To help ensure the safety of people walking, biking, and using mobile devices to and from school, as well as in the community, we ask that parents/guardians avoid arriving early in an effort to help keep our roads safe. We have heard concerns from the county and want to do our best to avoid any safety risks or ticketing from the sheriff’s office. Thanks again for all your help!

It’s School Choice Time in 4J!

In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time, or may request to enroll in a different 4J school provided there is space available. School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.

To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must apply by January 31 at midnight. Non-district residents must apply between March 1 and 31. All students who want to obtain a transfer must apply, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved out of our school neighborhood or the district and want to remain enrolled next year.

Virtual and in-person school visits are scheduled in the month of January. If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to learn more about our wonderful school and their school choice options!

4J Virtual Screening: LIKE

Our 4J Equity Department is offering a virtual screen of LIKE for students and families from February 6th – February 13th.

"LIKE breaks down why we find social media so irresistible examines who is controlling whom, and gives viewers the tools to pivot to a more balanced and contented relationship. It features Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, including the co-creator of the ‘LIKE’ button, experts in brain science, and teenagers. Medical and science experts explain the behavioral changes that come from chemical effects on the brain. But the 49-minute-long LIKE does not leave you with a sense of fear and foreboding. The core of the documentary is built around the kids and teens interviewed, and the empathy that they build with their audience as they look honestly at their usage and dependence on these tiny devices, consider the good that can come from and be transmitted via social media and rethink the relationship to one where they are much more aware and in balance."

A description of the film is below and the trailer can be viewed here: https://www.impactful.co/like

For questions, contact the 4J Equity Department at 541-790-7576 or email equity@4j.lane.edu.

Arrival & Departure Procedures (REPEAT)

Arrival Procedures:

All students will enter the building through the front exterior gates and will be greeted by staff to help guide them to their classroom. For students who are interested in breakfast, cafeteria doors will open at 8:05am and classroom doors will open at 8:20am. If your child is not eating a school breakfast, please wait until 8:15am to drop your student off at school.

Students arriving before the classroom doors open should wait in line outside their assigned entry locations. See the list (and map) below for your assigned grade level entrance:

  • Kindergarten: Side Gym Door (Awbrey Park Staff will greet your child as you arrive, check them in & walk your student to the gym)
  • 1st Grade: Outside of Red Hallway (Near North Exterior Gate)
  • 2nd Grade: North Exterior Gate
  • 3rd Grade: South Exterior Gate
  • 4th Grade: South Exterior Gate
  • 5th Grade: South Exterior Gate

To help with the flow of traffic, we ask that parents/guardians dropping off their student enter and exit through the east parking lot entrance (green arrows) and proceed to the back of the building. Please avoid using the west parking lot (staff lot) or front parking lot (bus zone) to drop off your child. Students may be dropped off along the curb/pick-up/drop-off zone in the back parking lot.

Dismissal Procedures:

At the end of the school day, students will exit the building with their classroom teacher, using their designated entry/exit locations. Bus riders will be escorted by staff to their bus. Students biking or walking will exit with their teacher. Students waiting to be picked up will wait with their teacher in the designated waiting areas near the back parking lot.

Parents/guardians may “pause park” along the curb to pick up their student(s) at dismissal (back parking lot).

Please note the following rules for “pause parking:

  • Drivers must remain in their vehicles at all times.
  • Drivers should pull forward as space becomes available.
  • When getting in or out of the vehicle, students must use the door closest to the sidewalk. Student should not exit the vehicle on the driver’s side for both safety and traffic flow reasons.

Drivers should follow the one-way direction traffic flow indicated in the map below. K-2 drivers should display their student name plates in vehicle windows at pick up.

If you are walking with your child before or after school, please meet your student in the front of the school and use the designated cross walk areas. Thank you!
