Principal's Message

Hello Arroyo Families,

Happy Fall! I hope that this packed-full October Newsletter finds you and your family healthy, safe, and finding a routine and rhythm during this time of distance learning. We miss having our students here on campus, but it brightens our days when we see them engaged in learning during Zoom classes and see them progressing and growing with their independent asynchronous assignments.

I want to give a special shout-out to our parents and caregivers...we know it is a challenging time balancing distance learning, working, and taking care of your family. Thank you for all you are doing to support your child's learning in addition to everything else you have on your plates! We are so proud of our teachers, support staff, students, and families for stepping up to take on this added responsibility to ensure continued learning.

If you have any technology issues or need support at any time, please reach out to your child's teacher on the Class Dojo app or call the school office at 909-985-1012. Our office is open from 8:00 AM-3:30 PM daily with all safety protocols in place, and we are here to assist!

Remember to carve out time for self-care and family fun, and enjoy this (hopefully cooler!) season.

Mrs. Bennett

School Safety Month

The Ontario-Montclair School District and Arroyo Elementary School are dedicated to providing a safe learning environment for students, staff, and families. October has been declared 'School Safety Month' by the OMSD Board of Trustees. Each week, look for short articles that will be posted on our Class Dojo App with important information related to safety. Topics will include 'Safe Routes to School'; the 'See Something, Hear Something, Say Something' campaign; and more information about our 'Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports' (PBIS) program. Arroyo School is also continuing with regular site emergency drills and staff trainings, and we encourage families to have these important conversations at home as well. On Thursday, October 15th, the state of California encourages schools and businesses to participate in the Great CA Shake-Out Earthquake Drill. This is a great time to discuss earthquake and fire safety at home, and we will post some resources on October 15th to help guide these discussions at home.

Student Attendance

Daily attendance is critical for academic achievement, and this is especially true during Online Learning. Therefore Arroyo and the District Office will continue to closely monitor your child's attendance. Remember that your student must log into all Zoom meetings on time every day. If your child is unable to attend class due to illness, please contact the front office at (909) 985-1012. Notification letters for attendance concerns will be sent home for any student missing 10% or more of the school year. A second letter will be sent, and mandatory Student Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting will be scheduled, in the event 3 or more additional absences are recorded after receipt of the first notification letter. We understand that ensuring daily attendance can be challenging for parents working outside the home, and we are here to help. The purpose of our attendance monitoring efforts is to build a partnership with you to make sure your child benefits from every single instructional minute!

What does it mean to be an International Baccalaureate (IB) School?

All TK-6th grade classes at Arroyo use the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, which sets us apart from other schools in the area. The IB framework is designed to challenge students to think for themselves, work collaboratively, take responsibility for their learning, and take action. Through our transdisciplinary units, our students explore local and global issues in real life contexts. One of the biggest focuses of the IB program is the 10 Learner Profile traits, which encourage our students to develop the behaviors of successful learners and citizens.
