Principal's Message
Aloha Hickam Families,
We hope you are having a wonderful February; only two more weeks left before Spring Break. For our families who are traveling over the break, we wish you a safe and fun-filled trip while you are away.
Although the quarter is ending, our school is busy with our WASC accreditation visit and Spring Program. As a reminder, dismissal time will be at 1:10 p.m. this entire week as our teachers will meet with the WASC visiting committee.
On Wednesday, March 8th, and Friday, March 10th, our bell schedules will be flipped due to Spring Program, meaning Wednesday will end at 2:10 p.m. and Friday will end at 1:10 p.m. We hope to see you there.
Also, please note the base exercise starting on Monday and subsequent road closure on Thursday, March 9. Information is listed below. Thanks again for your continued support of Hickam Elementary School. We are humbled to serve with you as partners in your child's education. Take care!
Sincerely,
Patrick Wetzel
Principal
WASC Accreditation Visit
- The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) will conduct our accreditation visit from February 27th through March 3rd.
- Accreditation is a school improvement process, HES evaluates itself on five domains: Organization, Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, School Culture and Student Support.
- As a school, we determine our school's strengths and growth areas. A few of these growth areas will become our school recommendations and help shape our school for the next six years.
- As a result of the WASC accreditation visit, we will end school early this week, with our dismissal time ending at 1:10 (Wednesday bell schedule for the entire week).
Spring Program on Friday, March 10th from 9-10:30
Our Spring Program will be from 9-10:30 on Friday, March 10th. Although we will have secured bleachers (seats approximately 500 people) for the event, parents may bring their own chairs, as there will be a designated seating area behind a set of cones. We ask for your cooperation in not arriving before 8:30 a.m. as we are still setting up for the event. Parking will be located on 8th st, 9th st, and Porter avenue.
We humbly ask if you are taking pictures or videos of the event, please only take pictures and videos of your child. We do have families who prefer not to have their children photographed or videoed, and we want to ensure we respect our families wishes. Your assistance with this matter is deeply appreciated.
After the event, you may take pictures of your children outside their respective classrooms. If you plan to exit after Spring Event with your child, sign-out will occur at your child's classrooms and not the office. We are excited to see you at Spring Program.
Base Exercise February 27th to March 10th
The 15th Wing and Team Hickam will conduct a base exercise from Feb 27-March 10. During this period, residents on and near the installation may hear announcements over the “giant voice” system and see an increase in the presence of emergency vehicles, convoys, and aircraft activity. Residents may also notice increased activity and personnel wearing personal protective equipment on base. On March 9, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam residents can expect to see helicopters landing in the parade field between the 15th Wing Headquarters building and Freedom Tower. The attached map indicates where road closures in the surrounding area will occur as this activity takes place.
