Eagle Update November 2018
"This is SUMMIT. We are EAGLES. We will RISE."
From the Principal
Middle school is the time where it's important to solidify character traits that will sustain our students throughout their lives. Helping others and the gift of joy that results from giving is an amazing experience, so this month Summit is kicking off a food drive. Each grade will be assigned specific non-perishable food items. These items will help to feed our own students within the Edmond Public Schools district that need assistance. Specific information regarding the food drive can be found below.
In addition, this month counselors are focusing their guidance lessons on gratitude. Did you know that people with a strong sense of gratitude tend to be happier and healthier individuals?
I would like to share a few things that happened last month for which I am particularly grateful. During October several of the substitute teachers working at Summit stopped by my office or my secretary's office to tell us what a wonderful school and amazing students we have at Summit. They were particularly impressed with our students' kindness, respect, and pleasant attitudes. In each case, the substitute said that they would love to continue coming back to Summit to work. This is particularly impressive because middle school is not always a popular age in which to substitute, which is likely due to the influence that the student/teacher relationship plays on student behavior. I was very proud to know that our students conducted themselves with character in the absence of their teacher. Additionally, in October, our 8th graders went on a field trip to the Oklahoma City Memorial. I was so happy to hear the stories relayed to me from our teachers about our students' behavior and the respect they demonstrated while at the museum and on the grounds of the Memorial. Many of the museum employees and patrons commented on how well behaved and attentive our students were during the trip.
As I reflect on my own gratitude this month, I want you to know that I am very grateful for our Summit students. I am particularly grateful for our Summit parents that send us amazing kids and are so supportive of our school and our students' success. I am incredibly appreciative of the talented, compassionate, and hard working teachers of Summit. Thank you all for your work and support to ensure that our Summit Eagles "will RISE."
I hope that your heart too, is filled with gratitude and giving this season.

Counselor's Corner- Enjoying the Holidays
As the holiday season approaches, we may view it with excitement and anticipation, or we may feel pressured by time, money, or expectations.
Here are a few ideas to aid in enjoying your holidays rather than feeling stressed:
· Be realistic about the time that you have available. We sometimes overcommit ourselves to attending multiple family events or parties and then feel as though we may be stretched too thin. If you choose which events you really want to attend, instead of automatically saying yes to everything, this can aid in not feeling so over-scheduled.
· Be realistic about the money that you have available. There are so many opportunities during this time of year to spend money, it is easy to overspend. Deciding ahead of time what you actually want to purchase will help to minimize impulse spending. If your family is in financial need, there are local agencies such as Project 66 Food Bank or the Hope Center, that can assist with food and clothing items.
What are your own expectations for the holidays? Are you attempting to re-create for your family similar experiences that you had as a child, such as favorite recipes or family traditions? Looking closely at what is most important to you now can help you create the most meaningful present moment experiences. (If you value spending conversational time with those you don’t see often, you may opt for food items with less preparation time. If you value religious practices, including these will enable you to feel more centered during this busy time of year.)
Being intentional about allocating your resources of time, money, and energy will help to ensure that your holidays are spent doing what you enjoy.
