8th Grade Parent Surveys

8th Grade Surveys: Please remember to turn in your surveys to the main office by Wednesday, March 21st or you may mail them directly to SCDE. This survey is administered by the State Department of Education and allows schools to gain needed feedback from our community. We really need your help in completing this survey and turning it back in. Thank you!

Passages - March 21

Our 8th-grade students have been working very hard on their Passage presentations. A postcard was mailed two weeks ago to inform each student and family of their presentation time and location.

What is Passages? A Passages presentation is an opportunity for students to reflect upon their learning and demonstrate readiness for the next phase of their educational experience...high school. EL Education Schools provide this experience and opportunity to eighth grade students to help them improve upon public speaking and to prepare them for student-led conferences. This year, students will present their Passages in front of a panel. The panel will consist of teachers at MGMS and across the district, administrators, and community members. Passages is an important opportunity that empowers students to speak of their growth and progress as a learner.

Students are allowed to stay at school until their presentations that day.

Attached is the rubric for Passages, as well as, the Learning Defense questions. Students could really use more practice. Ask your child to present to you this weekend, using both of these documents.

Fireflies Baseball Reading Program

Would you like for your student to be able to go to a Fireflies baseball game for FREE? All they have to do is read 4 "just right" books from February 7th until March 30th. If they meet their reading goal, they will receive a free ticket to a Fireflies baseball game, a hot dog, drink, chips, and surprise while at the game! This is a great opportunity to have your student make a reading goal. Students can get their reading log from their ELA teachers, in the Learning Commons, and from the Learning Commons Schoology Course.

Counseling News

A word from your Gator Counselor, Mrs. Stockdell....

Students interested in taking courses through VirtualSC this summer need to make sure they are enrolled. Please follow the specific instructions attached.

Students and parents should be very familiar with the courses and what is required. Be sure to navigate the website through VirtualSC and look at the parent tutorials and student tutorials so you know what is expected of you before registering for classes May 23rd. For example, you can look at the course syllabus for Physical Education and Personal Health. Everyone is reminded that it is not guaranteed that your student will be able to take a class this summer. Classes are based on availability and is open to all students in the state of South Carolina with priority given to seniors.
