UHS Procedure for Illnesses and Excused Absences
It is always difficult to determine when your student is ill enough to stay home from school and when they should attend. Research shows there is a positive correlation between good attendance in school and academic success.
School Procedure
• Students that are feeling ill at school will be referred to the nurse. If it is determined
that your student is too sick to be at school, you will be notified.
• Students will not be dismissed during the school day without parental consent. If the
parent is unavailable, the next emergency contact will be called.
• If it is an emergent situation, EMS will be called and the student will be taken to the
nearest or preferred hospital.
Exclusion from School Criteria
• Fever of 101 degrees with signs and symptoms, such as sore throat, rash, vomiting or
diarrhea.
• The illness prevents the student from participating comfortably in activities, as observed by the school staff.
• The illness results in greater care than the school staff determines they can provide
without compromising the ability to care for other students.
Return to School Following Illness
• If a student is sent home from school or kept home from school with fever, they must
be fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication such as ibuprofen or
acetaminophen before returning to school.
• If a student is sent home from school or kept home from school for vomiting and/or
diarrhea, they must be free of symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.
• If a student is started on antibiotics, they must have taken the medication for 24 hours
and be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.
Students must follow the procedure above and see the school nurse prior to contacting a
parent to be excused from school. This will assist in determining the necessity of the absence and ensure correct attendance documentation.
Following the criteria for exclusion from school and recommendations for returning to school following an illness will assist us in preventing the spread of illnesses at school. Your cooperation and support is appreciated. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact the school nurse.
We need everyone's help to keep students well so they can continue to go out and change the world!
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

• PE classes will be a Day 1 (juniors and seniors) during finals days.
- Students are not required to come to Learning Centers during finals days.
• Students will remain in their testing areas the entire testing period.
• All students must be in supervised areas of the building or must leave campus. Those supervised areas include the UHS Library Media Center or the lunchroom.
• Lunch will be available at UHS during each day of semester examinations.

Students review their second semester schedule
Students viewed their second semester schedules in Connections this week and the following information was shared:
- Students need to make sure they are scheduled for the required/core classes they requested (PE, math, English, social studies, science, resource, ESL). If a student is not scheduled for a required/core class we can add that.
- Students need to make sure all 8 periods appear on their schedule. If this is not the case, please let a counselor know.
- Requests for switching teachers will be not honored.
- Requests for switching periods within the same class will not be honored.
- We can honor requests to add a class in place of a learning center only if space allows.
- Students can drop a course to add a learning center if they do not already have a daily learning center.
- It is possible that a student could have a different teacher than he/she has this semester for any of his/her classes due to scheduling conflicts. It is not a mistake if you see that on your schedule.
- The last date to submit a schedule change form is Dec 19th by 3:30. If the counselor is not present please leave it in their respective mailboxes. This form must be signed by a parent before that time.

Student clubs continue to give back during the holiday season!
To the right is picture of UHS Hope in Action students who had collected and assembled a number of backpacks for children being transitioned into foster care. Many of these children enter the foster home with nothing of their own. These backpacks are put together for children by age group (0-3; 3-6; 6-12; 12-17) and by gender. Backpacks will be labeled and donated to the Star Clinic at Blank Children’s Hospital for children in transition into foster care.
These are great examples of UHS students changing the world by giving back to those in need in our community. Great work, J-Hawks!!
