Oak Hills Newsletter

Week of January 9, 2023

Message from the Principal

Dear Oak Hills Families,

Students adjusted so well to the routines of school last week! Thank you for helping them ease back into their evening sleep and waking up routines. Lots of smiles last week from students sharing memories from the break and others who were so ready to be with peers and staff again.

Please pay close attention to the school calendar below in January and February as there are "No School" days coming up for national holidays, staff development work days, and Grading Day. Thank you for your attention to that.

We are here for your students. Please reach out to their homeroom teachers or Care Team if you have any questions about their progress or need support.

Please also take a moment to review the updates from the PTO below. There are many student and family events coming up this winter and spring. The PTO wants to keep you in the loop about things your children can look forward to and ways for you to get involved. The next PTO meeting is next Wednesday at Oak Hills. You can attend in person or listen in on zoom.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Ms. Do

Vision Screening, Tuesday, January 17

All students at Oak Hills will have their vision screened Tuesday, January 17th. It is a simple camera style screening, with a photo taken of the child's eye and no subjective elements. However, notify the front office or your child's teacher if you wish to opt your student out of the screening.

FRIENDSHIP DAY, FEBRUARY 10th

Upcoming fun: Friendship Day parties in February! Make sure you’re a registered volunteer now to join your child’s party.

Change of Clothes in Backpacks

As January brings rainy, wet days, students still love to play outside for recess. It's a bit muddy in the soccer field and surrounding grass. And you never know where the random mud puddle will spring up just needing a student to enjoy a good splash through it!

Our supply of extra clothing is very low. We send a lot home, and we thank those of you who do return the items clean and ready for the next student. We would ask you to send your student with a full set of extra clothing in their own backpack. Please include undergarments and socks too. Mud has a way of soaking through layers very quickly.

And if you have extra clothing you can donate to us to have on hand for all Oak Hills students in need, please drop those items off at the front office. We especially need 4-6. 7-8, 8-10 pants/leggings for boys and girls.

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB)

  • Lunch time practice will continue on Jan 9th, 11th and 12th.

  • School Battles will begin the week of January 17th.

  • Please email Lindsay Sandor, OBOB Volunteer Coordinator, at candlsandor@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer for lunch recess practices or school battles. We are scheduling time slots now!

  • To prepare your child for battles now is a good time to review the books with your child and jot notes of trivia in a notebook. Many of the OBOB questions will ask about names, places, lists, colors, descriptions, About the Author information, numbers and more. The more details they can remember, the better!

Preparing for Inclement Weather

Beaverton School District Inclement Weather Information

When we have inclement weather, school schedules could be affected. School closure or delayed start decisions will typically be communicated to media outlets and posted on the district website, ParentSquare and social media by 5:30 a.m. The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely, the ability of parents and students to drive safely, and the ability of students to walk safely. Decisions are made for the entire District. However, we encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their children based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their locations.

Changes to Going Home Plans (Repeat)

Absences and dismissal changes can be reported to us via the Oak Hills website. There are buttons where you can click and report an absence or changes to how your child will be going home. For dismissal, please report the changes before 1:30 PM since this is when we will be delivering the information to our teachers and students. Thank you in advance for utilizing this communication tool. It will free up our phone lines for families, staff, and community members who urgently need to get in touch with the office.
