Freshmen Orientation Scheduled for August 24th
All incoming freshmen and any new students (and families!) to Rockland High School are encouraged to attend New Student & Freshmen Transition Night which will be held in the Rockland High School Auditorium from 6:30-8 PM on Wednesday, August 24th. During the course of the evening, each incoming Grade 9 student and their family will be presented with an overview of the high school experience from the student’s perspective as well as have a chance to tour the building with their schedule for the upcoming school year. Grade 9 students will also meet their upperclassmen mentor.
School Bus Registration Information
For any student interested in busing for next year, the fee is $275 for one student with a cap of $475 for two or more family members. Please note registration and payment are required by August 12th.
Free busing will be provided to all students in grades K-8 who live further than two (2) miles from their school and to all students grades K-12 who qualify for free or reduced lunch, regardless of the distance to the school.
All students K- 8 who live within two miles of their school will be charged unless they qualify for free and reduced lunch. All students Grades 9-12 will be charged unless they qualify for free and reduced lunch regardless of the distance to the school.
Seats are limited and it is possible that demand may exceed capacity. If that occurs, preference is required by state mandate to be given to those in Grades K through 6 who live over two miles from school.
This link will bring you to the registration form.
Prior to payment, registration is mandatory.
You will have two options for payments:
Please send a check made out to “Rockland Public Schools” to the Superintendent’s Office, Transportation Coordinator, 34 MacKinlay Way, Rockland, MA 02370. Please include the student/s name and school on the check.
or
Pay online will be available on the registration link.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call (781) 871-8418, Noelle Novio, Transportation Coordinator or email buses@rocklandschools.org.

Summer Fitness Program
School Supplies
Rockland High School does not post general supply lists in advance of the start of the school year like they do at the elementary and middle school level. Each teacher will provide students with a list of needed supplies for the class. The student's Chromebook, Chromebook charger, a pencil/pen, notebook, and folder are perfect for the first day of school.
MCAS Math Acceleration Programming
Similar to the model where students took Health and had a Directed Study every other day during freshman year, we will be having Grade 10 students take an MCAS Math Acceleration class and a Directed Study every other day during sophomore year. Grade 10 students will receive .5 credits and a letter grade for this full year-long course. The course is a graduation requirement.
The reason I have amended our graduation requirements to include MCAS Math Acceleration are for the following reasons:
The shift to the computer-based MCAS in 2019 has resulted in a lower number of students earning proficiency.
Fewer students are receiving exemplary scores, which limits their opportunities to receive the John & Abigail Adams Scholarship. Students who receive the John & Abigail Adams scholarship can receive discounted tuition to a Massachusetts public college or university.
Due to the pandemic, there has been a learning loss in content-subject areas, such as math. Students in the Class of 2025 who took the Grade 10 Math MCAS had their Algebra I experience in Grade 8 reduced to ⅔ of the year due to the school closure in March of 2020 and learned high school math freshmen year in the hybrid model.
There is no need for MCAS English Acceleration since the MCAS English Language Arts assessment is skill-based; the MCAS Math assessment is content-based.
The course description for MCAS Math Acceleration would be as follows:
MCAS Math Acceleration (Full-year course .5 Credits)
This course provides extra support for all tenth graders or students who have previously failed the MCAS assessment by preparing for the May MCAS test in mathematics. Students will learn test-taking strategies, practice the computer-based assessments, and reinforce frequently tested concepts in algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
Summer Homework
Summer homework for some of our Advanced Placement courses and Honors Grade 9 and Honors Grade 10 English courses are now available on our website by clicking here.
https://www.rocklandschools.org/o/rockland-high/page/summer-homework
We have also created a general school-wide summer reading assignment for all students, however, the reading and assignment are optional (but strongly recommended).
Selected titles are below. Students who participate are asked to redesign the cover of the chosen book based on their interpretation of the work. The redesigned cover will have to include the following components:
Title
Author
Visual representation of a theme within the book
Meaningful quote that reflects an important aspect of the book. Students should be able to explain why the quote was chosen during our RHS Library Takeover in September.
Students will use Canva to complete their projects. Completed covers should be emailed to jkemp@rocklandschools.org by September 9th. The library takeover will occur Friday, September 23rd.
All students who complete the summer reading assignment are invited to participate in the Library Takeover! Students will be called down in September during G block to participate in a book chat and see their redesigned covers on display. Participants are encouraged to invite staff members to attend.
Suggested Titles are:
Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman
Storm in a Teacup: The Physics of Everyday Life by Helen Czerski
The Many Worlds of Albie Bright by Christopher Edge
I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys
The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku
