Being Proactive versus Reactive
Every day is different when you walk through the doors of the school. Your content keeps building and relationships continue to evolve. Part of the foresight that is needed in our profession is being able to proactively plan for what might come next or what gaps might result for a new topic/behavior. Other moments call for reactive "on-your-feet" judgement calls. In the realm of behavior, these 2 words can change our mindset for how we interact with disruptive behavior. Proactively, we can watch for triggers that might lead a student to exhibit problematic behavior. We also can coach ourselves to be positive in our reaction when the behavior manifests. When the behavior takes the student out of the classroom, I have created a quick Google Form that the teacher can fill out to keep data on these behaviors so that we can look for patterns and do what is best for all of our learners. I have used the terms, "major" and "minor." Please see me if you would like an explanation of the difference. Use this Google Form when a student needs time outside of the classroom.
