Student Spotlights
Elementary School Honoree – Max Mefford
Max is a great student to have in class. He is a friend to all, follows all directions, and has a great attitude. He is a great role model for others of how to do the right thing, give your best effort, and keep a positive attitude. He is kind, funny, and compassionate. I can count on Max to show up everyday and give his best effort all while making others smile.
Getting to know Max:
- You have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick? “The Rainbow Connection by Kermit The Frog. It’s a kid-friendly song that is funny. I like Kermit.”
- What is your favorite part of day? “Either night time when I’m sleeping or lunch. Sleeping allows me to rest my body after long days. Lunch time because I’m usually very hungry. My mom packs me a large lunch and I usually eat all of it!”
- If you could spend the Christmas holidays in any location, where would it be? “I think I’d like to go back to Nevada, and visit Las Vegas again. We went there on a break once and I liked going out there. There are more places in Las Vegas I’d like to visit.”
“Max's personality and sense of humor is a great addition to our classroom,” commented Ms. Chambers, Max’s 4th-grade teacher. “He loves to make others laugh and smile. Max does the right thing without even being told to do so. This year, he found money in the bathroom and immediately turned it into the office. Because of his honesty, he got to keep the money after it went unclaimed for a few days. Max's integrity at a young age is something to be admired.”
Middle School Honoree – Marten Wallace
Marten is a team player. He is happy to assist his classmates and even teachers when needed. He is a pleasure in class, and he always has something insightful to add to discussions. He is strong both in academics and in his own personal hobbies.
Getting to know Marten:
- You have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick? “Believer by Imagine Dragons. They are one of my favorite bands and I’ve been listening to that song for a while.”
- What is your favorite part of day? “Probably after school. I get to play on my phone online with my friends.”
- If you could spend the Christmas holidays in any location, where would it be? “I’d pick to spend that time with my family, in Kingsport and in Flag Pond. In Kingsport we have some pets there and lots of space. Flag Pond is cool because we can go hiking close by.”
“Marten is so intelligent,” said Ms. Darnell, Marten’s ELA teacher. “He is my ‘go to’ when I have any history questions in class! I really enjoy having his insight."
High School Honoree – Sadiq Mohammed
Sadiq is a natural leader and organizer. He is the President of Key Club and also serves in Beta Club. He devotes hours of his time to service both at University School and in the community.
Getting to know Sadiq:
- You have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick? “Belong in the Sun by an artist called Teo. The song is inspired by Latin music, it has a fast beat. I like the instrumentation. It’s one of my favorite songs.”
- What is your favorite part of day? “I’d say my free periods. I have the choice of hanging with my friends or studying. I usually balance that out throughout the week.”
- If you could spend the Christmas holidays in any location, where would it be?“I’d take my family to Japan. I love the scenery in the pictures I’ve seen, the culture and the snow they have there.”
"Sadiq is President of Key Club, of which I am faculty sponsor,” pointed out Ms. Squibb. “He is a highly involved, confident leader who takes initiative to team build with fellow Key Club officers as they organize both service and social events for students across the high school grades."

YEARBOOKS
Dear Parents,
It is time to start ordering the 2022/2023 yearbooks. Our yearbook company has changed and we are now working with Entourage Yearbooks. The good news is that there is a price reduction for the high school book but an increase for the elementary/middle school. These costs do not include personalization which is an additional charge.
There are two ways you can order your child’s yearbook. You may order online at https://www.entourageyearbooks.com . Once on the website, click on “Buy Yearbook/Ad”. You will be prompted to identify the school, city, and state. You will have a choice for University School (elementary/middle) or University High School and then purchase yearbook link. If you want your book personalized, you will be given that option as well.
The price for ordering is $35 for the high school yearbook and $30.00 for elementary/middle school yearbook. If you choose to include personalization that will be an additional $6.95 charge.
The second way you can order is to submit your order through the school. Just return the attached form with a check made out to University School to either your child’s teacher or to me. Please make sure the form is completed.
The deadline to order is April 14, 2023.
In addition, we are looking for any pictures of vacations, pets, outings, ballgames, or activities that your child has participated in this school year. If you would not mind sharing your pictures, please send them to school with your child, or email them to me at hammondse@etsu.edu. You may also upload your pictures directly to the yearbook website. When you are on the website you can click on the button to upload photos. It will take you to the site to upload. You will have a choice as to what file you wish upload your photos.
Thank you for your help and if you have any questions or problems, please email me at hammondse@etsu.edu.
