This Week in Mathematics
This week students are learning how to analyze data using data collected from different agencies from around the world. They are applying what they have learned about measures of center and spread to interpret and infer information about the subject of their data, as well as evaluate it to decide how to best represent the information (histogram, box plot, or dot plot). Today, we looked at the amount of coal (in millions of tons) mined in the 20 top coal mining states and how we could use our knowledge of median, interquartile range, the upper and lower quartiles, minimums and maximums of data to better understand how these measures are related.
