December 2021
Message from the Principal
We hope that you and your family had an enjoyable Thanksgiving break.
We are just three short weeks away from the winter break. We will be working hard these next three weeks and hope your student will be here everyday! Staff is working hard to meet each individual student's needs.
In the first trimester both grade levels had set SMART goals for our students. The SMART in SMART goals stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.
Fourth Grade 21/22:
By the end of trimester 1 we will have 40% of our students scoring either above/at or one grade level below on the iReady math diagnostic.
Fifth Grade SMART Goal
By the end of trimester 1 we will have 42% of our students above/one grade level below on the iReady Math diagnostic
Both grade levels met their goals and set new goals for the 2nd trimester:
Second trimester goals:
Fourth Grade 21/22:
By the end of trimester 2 we will have 70% of our students scoring either above/at or one grade level below on the iReady math diagnostic.
Fifth Grade SMART Goal
By the end of trimester 2, we will have 50% of our students above/one grade level below on the I Ready Math Diagnostic.
Math concepts grade levels are focusing on this month are:
Geometry: Shapes, lines, line segments, rays, angles, area and perimeter. Fifth grade will add in volume!
Long division: In fourth grade students are working on single digit division and fifth grade is working on double digit division. It is very helpful for students to know their math facts to help them divide.
This month our Golden Eagle Award winners will be invited to a painting party.
WE have two Rewards Plus Recesses in the month of December. One will be this Friday for the month of November and then the bonus recess will happen again on December 17th for all students who have not received pink slips, referrals or suspensions.
The class with the most Class Golden TEAM tickets wins a two day gingerbread house building activity with Mrs. Napoli. Classes earn the TEAM tickets by following our TEAM expectations: Take responsibility, earn respect, act safely and make a difference!
Let’s finish out 2021 with a lot of hard work and fun.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns,
Mrs. Napoli

Palermo Union School District uses 7 Mindsets as it’s district wide social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum. 7 Mindsets is a research based curriculum that looks at the 7 mindsets of the most successful people. These mindsets are; 1. Everything is Possible: We are all capable of extraordinary lives! We want our children to reach higher and dream bigger. We encourage our students to dream big and push themselves to be positive and strive for their biggest dreams. 2. Passion First: Student’s reflect on what they are passionate about. All of us are unique and we want to encourage our students to identify what they love and are good at and connect with those passions. 3. We are Connected: Everyone who comes into our lives can help us reach our dreams. It is our job to maximize those positive relationships. 4. 100% Accountable: We all make mistakes. It’s all about how we overcome adversity and learn from our mistakes and challenges. 5. Attitude of Gratitude: Our mind is a powerful tool. When we live our lives thinking about the positive we will be much more productive. 6. Live to Give: Helping others is so satisfying. To receive love, respect, and financial security, one must first learn to give those things. 7. The Time is Now: Take purposeful action in the present to reach your dreams. Set short term goals that move you in the direction of your long term goal. Each mindset has 4 critical components. Our teachers teach a lesson on each critical component weekly. I have a weekly message that Mrs. Napoli includes in her morning message that targets the lesson that the teacher is focusing on that week. We have already completed everything is possible, passion first, and we are connected mindsets and started the 100% accountable mindset just a couple of weeks ago.

Attendance Matters
This holiday season, the best gift you can give your child is a good education. The best place to get an education is in school. It’s tempting to extend your vacation by a few days, but remember, those days count as absences. Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time.
So make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning.
