Parents Still Make the Difference!
Report Cards: October 21, 2021
- Praise your child for their successes. This may be a good grade, improvement in behavior or attendance, increase in motivation, or continuing on despite adversity.
- Realize each child has their own strengths. You may have multiple children in your home - one may be really good at math, the other may love history, and the third is super creative and love the arts. It's so important to recognize and celebrate your child's individual strengths; not everyone will excel in everything and that's okay!
- Discussion is key. If your child came home with a low grade, start the conversation from a place of discussion, not lecture. Ask questions like "Were there areas in this subject that you struggled with more than others?" or "Next grading period, what are some things we can do together to help you in this area?".
- Communicate with your child's teacher. Continue to build a working relationship with your child's teacher. If your child is struggling in certain areas, communicate that and see what opportunities the school may have to assist (tutoring, short take home practice questions, etc.).
- Goal set for the next grading period. Talk with your child and help them set realistic goals for their next report card. Goals could be specific to multiple areas such as grades, behavior, attendance, organization, or challenging your child to ask questions to the teacher if they don't understand something!
- Remind your child that we are all on their team. There are so many team members that want to see them succeed: you as a parent, their teacher, coach, counselor, administrator. A team works together and if they need assistance, there are so many people that will be happy to help!
