Delran High School Broadcast
November 19, 2019
DELRAN HIGH SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
Delran High School, an inclusive learning community, provides educational opportunities for intellectual development while valuing the importance of cultural diversity and tradition.
A Message from Mr. Finkle!
Since this is my last broadcast for the month of November, I would like to wish our entire DHS family and community a wonderful Thanksgiving. May the best things in life be yours, not only this Thanksgiving but throughout the years. Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours. For those of you who are traveling, please be safe!
Great news, the new Delran High School entrance is officially open for business. Between the hours of 7:30 and 2:15, the only entrance that can be used by students and the public is through the newly constructed vestibule.
Shortly, we will have a visitor identification system that will require a driver's license to enter the building or pick up your child. This is extremely important and we will not make any exceptions for anyone. I will communicate to everyone when this system is up and running. Until then, we will continue our previous procedure.
Just a friendly reminder that we are having an early dismissal on Wednesday, November 27th and no school on Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th!
Congratulations to Delran High School's 2019 Inductees into the National Honor Society. The evening was a memorable occasion and we are very proud of your accomplishment! Please enjoy the pictures posted below!
Congratulations to our first marking period Principal's List and Honor Roll students. Our Principal's List students enjoyed a delicious breakfast last Thursday as a reward for their efforts and accomplishment. Click here to read the article in The Delran Sun regarding DHS's celebration of our scholars!
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Twelve Angry Women. Kudos to Ms. Schreiner, Mr. Martinez, and the entire cast and crew! Enjoy the pictures below!
A special congratulations to our boys' soccer team who once again had an exemplary season, won the South Group 2 Sectional Championship and played in the state final. We are all very proud of their hard work and accomplishments this season!
Congratulations to our football team on their outstanding season and their Patriot Division Championship. We are very proud of their dedication to the program; but more importantly, for caring and supporting each other through the ups and downs of the season. The football team is a great example of high school athletics at its best! They are more than a team, they are family.

CURRICULUM REPORT
Language Arts Department
Mrs. Cavanaugh and Miss Schreiner's two Forms of Literature and Composition 9 classes have been working on sketching and writing "My Two Sides." This assignment connects to their novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. The main character, a Native American teenager transfers to an all-white high school to better his life. Just as he realizes he lives each day as part-time white and part-time Native American, our students are examining how they alternate between "two sides" of their personalities in their everyday lives.
Students in the Honors American Literature & Composition acted out and analyzed scenes from The Crucible with their literature circle groups.
Students in the CP World Literature & Composition classes connected themes from The Lord of the Flies to an article about bullying. Specifically, students evaluated why people tend to follow the crowd. They were also able to connect these ideas to their own lives.
Journalism students published their second edition earlier this month. Our third issue is due out in December.
Social Studies Curriculum Update
Below you can find the content that is being studied in core Social Studies courses:
Lesson & Learning Activity Highlights
US I: Mrs. Rau’s and Mr. Pope’s classes engaged in a cooperative research project identifying, evaluating, then highlighting contributions of minorities in the American Revolution.
World History: Students are creating recipes and mapping their origins to demonstrate the global impact of the Columbian Exchange.
Genocide Studies: Students are conducting a project where they compare their baby and childhood pictures to those of Jewish children in Europe prior to Nazi occupation. The students are meant to understand the connection between those of the past and today in examining the "regularness" of life prior to German occupation and the Holocaust.
AP Human Geography: Students took part in an activity simulating the mapping of an epidemic to find its source and examine the epidemiological transition and its impact on the demographic transition.
FAFSA Now Available
The FAFSA is now available. It is never too early to begin the process of applying for financial aid. Every senior and senior family with plans to attend a two-year or four-year college after graduation is encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa. Pay attention to the deadlines given by each school where you plan to submit an application.
SAT Crash Course at DHS
Naviance
All students 10th -12th have an account.
Naviance is a web-based tool that allows your student to explore their values, personality, strengths and correlate them to career clusters. It directs them to colleges with suggested majors so that they can build a list of colleges to explore.
Seniors and Juniors can see upcoming college visitations and request to attend directly in Naviance.
All students should be building their personal activity resume.
Ask your student to share with you what they are doing in Naviance.
College Planning
Is your senior ready to send out college applications this fall? Click here to review what to do this summer to prepare for college admissions.
Students at all grade levels are encouraged to begin exploring colleges. Build colleges of interest in Naviance and plan campus visitations.
