A Message from Principal Choquette 3/2/18
Good afternoon, I hope you all had a nice February vacation with your kids and were able to get outside and enjoy that beautiful weather mid-week that you had.
We will be having another lockdown drill next week. This drill will be different in two ways. First, we will be conducting it during a lunch period. We have not tried a lockdown drill during a lunch period and it is important that we practice during unstructured times of the day. Second, we will be doing what is called an "organic" lockdown drill. What this means is that a teacher will initiate the drill rather than the office. This means that a selected teacher will lean out into the hall from their classroom and state three time, "this is a lockdown drill." Then as other teachers in the building hear it, they continue with the same thing. The first teacher will then call the office to let us know they called a lockdown drill and then we will also make an announcement. The police department has recommended us practicing drills this way because anyone in the building can call a lockdown if they feel there is a need in their part of the building. Please continue to speak to your children about the importance of practicing drills. Their safety has to be our priority.
There have been some questions as regarding the student walk-out on March 14th. We have had a few students ask if they could participate on March 14th. At the elementary level we are framing it as a walk for school safety. I, along with Mrs. Sperry, and Miss Nora will walk around Lampron Park with any student who wants to participate. If you would like your child to participate, please contact your child's teacher. Again, we are framing it as a walk for school safety. We will not be discussing Florida or regulations being talked about on the federal level. Teachers may choose to have age-appropriate discussions in their classrooms. If your child wants to talk more and/or has concerns, they will be referred to Mrs. Sperry.
In regards to school safety, we will now only have one point of entry into our building for families/visitors. This will mean that if any preschool families want to enter the building, including their child's classroom, they will have to use the main office door and sign in and out of the building. Parents may still drop their children off on the preschool playground, but may not enter the building through the classroom doors. The same will be true for families who enter through the big playground door. If you need to come into the school, you will need to use the main office entrance and sign in and out. I know this may be inconvenient, but the safety of your children is our number one priority. We appreciate your cooperation in advance. A safety sheet will be coming home next week with our new safety procedures.
The lost and found is overflowing! We will be donating the clothing and miscellaneous items in the lost and found on Friday, March 9th. Please stop by and see if your child has anything in the lost and found.
Have a wonderful weekend.
